Obviously, it's better to have it, but...... it's not going to be the end of the world.

Because back then we didn't have the infrasctructure or bandwidth demands for it to matter.

Net Neutrality was passed to keep the Internet fine.

Not that we would need net neutrality if we dropped the hammer on this regionally monopoly shit. Free market my pale white ass.

we don't trust Comcast or Verizon to provide acceptable prices, technical support or customer satisfaction - why should we trust them to not throttle traffic and ask for rate increases now that they've been given carte blanche to do just that? (after lobbying heavily in favor of it while pinky swearing they'd never actually do the things they want to be legal, mind you?)

There were some negatives.

This is what was done in the period between Verizon's successful lawsuit striking down the laws used to govern them and net nuetrality. kbJ7zvn

Under the new rules approved Thursday, the Comcasts and AT&Ts of the world could slow down or block access to services they don't like or happen to be in competition with. They could also charge higher fees of rivals and make them pay up for higher transmission speeds. They just have to post their policies online or tell the FCC.

Such things have happened before. In 2007, for example, The Associated Press found that Comcast was blocking or throttling some file-sharing. And AT&T blocked Skype and other internet calling services on the iPhone until 2009.

Thursday's rule change also eliminates certain federal consumer protections, bars state laws that contradict the FCC's approach, and largely transfers oversight of internet service to another agency altogether, the Federal Trade Commission.

Everyone complains about the cost of Internet service and lack of competition/innovation.

You know what will fix that? Giving those same companies we hate the freedom to do whatever the fuck what they want. They were just screwing us over to stick it to Obama or something. Now they'll play fair.

where was the competition before net neutrality?

If repealing net neutrality is supposed breed competition, why were mega corps pushing to get it repealed? Wouldn't it be in their best financial interest to keep competition low? Are cable companies running some sort of charity all the sudden?

Spooking posted...
In 2010, the FCC issued a new set of regulations to Internet Service Providers called the FCC Open Internet Order. This order had three key points that ISPs had to follow: That they had to be transparent, as in the ISPs need to fully disclose all network management policies, terms and conditions, etc.; that they could not block lawful content, and that they could not unreasonably discriminate. It's key to note as well that these regulations were more strict on land-based broadband providers, and not wireless providers such as Verizon, although the same rules applied.

People are confusing NN with OIO.

Yet in the debate earlier today, they made it quite clear that they intended to repeal all of those things.

Best case scenario, repealing NN is just the first step.

So like Sony right now could make a deal and pay Verizon to throttle any thing from xbox servers to make the competition look bad. Just using this as an example of what COULD happen legally now
