School is not an option (25 years is enough school for me).

Best resources for self teaching programming and free software or websites to practice?

Specifically, I am looking into app development or website development. I took one programming class in college so I have a basic grasp of C++ but that's it.

Other tips would be appreciated.

Khan Academy has a good Java course. Codeacademy might have C++ or C#

Code academy is pretty good, in my experience.

After getting a handle on the basic syntax, I'd decide on some small project to accomplish. My first time using Matlab, I decided to create a simple saliency map function that takes in an input image and outputs a saliency map based on the principles of lateral inhibition. Was a bitch and a really shitty algorithm, but it was fun and really got me to explore the language.

Pretty much, I think the biggest reason people stop halfway through these online tutorial things is that there ends up being a lack of motivation. There are only so many arbitrary lists you can loop through without wanting to shoot yourself in the head. So coming up with a project that you're interested in with a clear goal in mind helps keel you going.

I would suggest starting with Python. It's fairly intuitive compared to other languages and you can do a lot with it. Then once you get the basic gist of data structures and algorithms from that, transitioning to other languages like C/C++ is a lot easier

https://www.codecademy.com/en/tracks/python

Or if you want to go straight to C++ I would advise this book to go along with whatever intro to C++ book you get

there's some companys that run 7-9 week "coding bootcamps" that i heard kinda puts you through rigorous coding lessons that will get you up to speed

or you just learn on your own like a lot of people do.

Damn I just saw the app development part

The easiest way to get into that is through Android, which is pretty much Java. But learning Java from scratch is a pain so C# is another option

At home with the internet. Recommend ASP.NET MVC as a good platform to learn how to put websites together, since its a simple and easy-to-follow organizational structure. And use C#, homie. And dont go down the rabbit hole of best coding practices because youll get caught up on dependency injection and never come out
