it's honestly creepy how deeply most of you seem to look into peoples' account history

a low karma user with a ton of posts doesn't indicate anything, you're just allowing it to confirm your biases

Step 1: click on username
Step 2: read brief summary of user information
Step 3: see if there's an extensive post history

I mean that takes about 6 seconds, and it's worth it's weight in gold if it means not getting drawn into a stupid argument with someone who's only goal is to irritate you.

can't you just decide this based on the actual contents of their posts
While I'm not trying to "call out" pinky, he's a good poster, yes you should be able to judge any post by it's content not the poster. And a huge reason why this forum is the way it is. A lot of people immediately dismiss people based on past posting history and not the post itself that is in front of them.

As pinky said, I think it's more about first noticing the content of the user's post and THEN going to check their account age. At that point you can pretty much say, "well that's a troll account"

so every new user who disagrees with you is just a troll account? you're letting this confirm your biases. account age means nothing, doesn't indicate trolling at all.

Meh. To each their own. As I said, pinky is a good guy, he does what works for him. But I know people that will loose their shit and argue that water isn't wet based on some 2 year old screen shot they have of someone's post they're still stewing about. And that spreads to thinking that anyone that might have a similar thought that Poster A had two years ago, they're still stewing about than those posters must be alts of Poster A. So a lot of people are strictly judging on poster's names or history to make the connection.

Hell I've got several people 100% assured I'm an Admiral alt ffs.

I'm quite happy to make an assumption about the nature of someone's intentions if all the usual indicators are there.

- shitposting
- brand new account
- more posts in the past 3 days than I have the last month

Genuinely new users don't make an account on gamefaqs, find CE and then go on 24/7 tirades about all the usual spicy topics. It's the M.O of people like hoth who get off on this shit, and it's worthwhile to figure these people out so you can have the more wholesome positive experience you were talking about earlier.

I have a bias against shitposting alts who have less than 50 karma but seem to know the entire history of CE and the backgrounds of every regular here.

If someone is new and posts in a decent way, I have a no issue with their karma at all.

And that's fine, if it makes your posting experience better. But this shit that started at the beginning of this thread where someone just posts a poster's info and adds nothing of value to the conversation, are worse, even if the accused poster is a troll. Just not posting and leaving a thread you know is a troll thread is far better for the forum as a whole than that shit. Because a troll doesn't exist without it's enablers.

When someone posts outlandish comments the likelihood of them being a new account is pretty high. There is an obvious difference between an outlandish remark and something someone would just disagree with.

Pretty much. This place is an established community, so if some relatively new user comes here and starts posting garbage right off the bat, they're almost certainly an alt dedicated to trolling. In that case, the karma is an indicator not to acknowledge them.

Those accounts are usually banned in short order anyway.

Sages are generally the worst posters because they never get modded

Case in point, this account right here is a prime example of a low-karma, high post-count, shitposting troll alt. Look at all the banned accounts in the sig.

Probably Kineth. He accuses everyone who disagrees with him or doesn't like him here of being an alt, even if they have thousands of karma.

That happens to me. Several new accounts back in Sept or Oct accused me of being Hoth.
Tbh I never checked. I just find it really odd because I don't follow/interact with him a significant amount for people to make that connection. But I think it's mostly due to the accusers checking my karma and thinking it's low for a 10 year old account, and so they go to that, so they can dismiss whatever I post.
