Definitely one of the best older games I've played in a long time. I think what's really striking about it to me is that it doesn't really feel like anything else I've played. Well, besides the first Metroid, but that's got a slew of issues. And I haven't played any Metroidvanias, so I don't know the similarities, but I figure the Metroid series must do something very right if it's become shorthand for a genre. You just don't really think of 2D games as "atmospheric", but it makes the cut.

it is a good game but I think zero mission stuck more with me. only part of super I really remember is the final boss herself. and it was only a few years ago I played it the first time.

Is that the one that's a remake of the first game? I would like to play that, since the original also has a pretty good atmosphere factor, but the gameplay is just too clunky. But I'd also hope that they redesigned the layout some. That game had way too many big vertical shafts with too many doors that led to a bunch of areas that all looked the same. I liked Super Metroid in part because they didn't have stuff like that

yeah the ZM is a remake of the first with an added section at the end. can't recall how similar the maps where but I do know they made Kraid a lot bigger. so his boss fight was pretty different. considering they had better limitations on graphics though the scenery I do want to say had more variety.

It's my favorite 2D game and in my top 5 overall. My only real complaint is that the controls could be better. Cycling through items with Select is a tad annoying, for example. As is having to hold a button to sprint.

The atmosphere is definitely something it does right, and the music is a large part of that. The replay value is great too, with all the hidden details, different ways through the game, sequence breaks, etc. Developers should also learn from the way the game teaches you how to play without spelling things out, although there are some messages when you obtain power-ups. The fact that unnecessary elements like that are kept to a minimum helps with the atmosphere. Modern games often fall afoul of that with all the crap they overload you with, such as endless tutorials, map markers, cramped UIs, etc.

Zero Mission is far superior to the original in just about every way (including the layout). It's one of the best remakes out there.

Now play Fusion and Zero Mission.

Fusion is definitely different from the others, but I really loved the atmosphere of that one.

I also played Super Metroid on my SNES Classic the other day.
It was the first time I managed to complete the game under an hour(in-game time).
I did use savestates though so it isn't really something to brag about(i merely wanted to try another route and used savestates to assist).
I also skipped the grappling beam for the first time and that made Draygon harder to kill but I eventually managed to kill him using the speed booster.

Super Metroid is phenomenal. My first time playing it was on the Wii Virtual Console and I had a blast. I can tell that it'd be a game that I'd get hopelessly lost in if I played it when it first came out haha

I only briefly looked at a guide twice. Once was to understand wall jumping, and the second to figure out how to get to lower Norfair (which turns out was just me being stupid and missing an obvious hidden path to the rest of Maridia).

Super Metroid is a legendary status game. It is every bit amazing today as it was back then. I still listen to Super Metroid cover tunes on the regular. It always makes me happy to see people still discovering and loving it 22 years later.

I mean, I wouldn't say I just "discovered" it. It's been on my radar for at least a decade, but it took a while to get around to it
