I've lived in the south my entire life and thunderstorms seem to always require heat. I've been around a decent amount of the US and never heard of that phenomena.

Yes. I've seen it happen. Not an outright storm, but there was thunder and lightning.

Thundersnow is actually fairly common in the plains and tornado alley.
Snownadoes are pretty damn rare though, at least any of them beyond the scope of a dust devil.

Would a big lightning blast (or multiple) hitting a huge snow deposit cause it immediately turn to a huge cloud of mist? I've gotta admit, that would be some cool shit to see. Imagine if you were in a field and that happened around you.

Thundersnow is pretty common in the midwest. I'd say it happens 2-3 times a winter here in Milwaukee

In Missouri, thundersnow means we're getting a bigass ice storm overnight.

I know for sure I experienced that kind of storm once last year. I had to look it up since I had never seen it before. I live in MN.

I still think my favorite lightning storm was down in Texas during the Summer. It was Flash-Boom! Flash-Boom! Not even a second in between. Like 10 a minute

I don't think I've encountered it more than like once or twice in Kansas City. And it was only a couple of booms each.

They can also happen when it is really dry, and the air tends to get really dry in the cold.

My favorite was when I went on a trip with my friends and a fun guy. We were sitting on the porch just watching the storm and listening to Conan on the radio.
