Nintendo doesn't own Bayonetta, they paid for the 2nd and 3rd games funding.

That was because Sega wasn't going to do anything with Bayonetta since it didn't sell that well, but the series did get a major boost in popularity once she was announced for Super Smash bros. People began checking her game out and found out they were actually really good.

Sony and MS had the chance to get Bayo 2 and they passed on it. The game literally would have never existed if Nintendo didn't fund it.
