Miles was great in DS9 but pretty low visibility in TNG.

Data was the best; so many hilarious situations while studying human behavior.

Toss up between Data and Picard for me. Data allowed them to express and explore a lot of existentialism story threads, and they were always interesting. However, Jean Luc Picard was always a bad ass character. My favourite episode was the one that involved him exploring who he was as a person, a past regret, and how changing that one point in his past altered his entire being as a member of Star Fleet. Such a good episode.

It's always been Worf, and he eventually ended up taking command of the Defiant in DS9.

If you remember the Next Generation episode "Conundrum," everyone on the Enterprise D lost their memory. Everyone was trying to figure out who was who but Worf immediately stepped up and started giving orders, many times to Picard, that ended up saving the ship.

Like Miles, Worf is a better character on DS9. Early seasons TNG hes portrayed as a borderline animal at times, and even later hes frequently shown as incompetent or ineffective. On DS9, hes a badass.

Character wise, Picard. He was always the voice of reason, put everyone before himself, and Patrick Steward was just great.

Entertainment wise, Data. Brent Spiner is honestly a bad actor, and a bad actor playing an android trying to be human just made nearly every scene with him to be so unintentionally funny.

Kind of surprised Riker is getting some votes. He was okay, but the problem was that his character arc was finished in Best of Both Worlds. We see that he is indeed ready to make the tough call and become a captain. And then he goes on serving as first officer for the rest of the series.

The problem with Riker was that the show had to write him to be deliberately uncharacteristic just to give reasons for him to continue being on The Enterprise. In season 2, in the episode with his father, it's established that Riker's driving ambition in life was the be captain of his own ship. Riker was already overqualified for his own command before Best of Both Worlds, so it became absurd that he still refused command after the ridiculous loss of Federation leadership following the Borg attack.

The best and (and ballsiest) solution I ever heard about what to do with Riker was in an SF Debris review. In discussing Second Chances -- the episode where Riker finds that a clone was made of him during a transporter accident 8 years before -- he suggests that having the clone criticize Riker for having grown complacent and lost his ambitions should have finally been motivation for him to realize his career has stalled and accept command, leaving the show. In his place, the Riker clone would have joined the Enterprise crew as Lieutenant, allowing Frakes to stay on the show while adding a slightly different character. Data would have been promoted to first officer, and it would have been a show refresh.

For anyone curious:

IIRC, Geordi was almost borderline recurring. Like he was the lowest tier main character. Not in quality, just in focus.

Yeah... there isn't anything particularly interesting about Geordi aside from his anti-blindness visor, which didn't come up a lot. I'd say he's easily the most plain, average main character.

My ranking would be Data > Picard > Riker > Dr. Crusher > the rest > Wesley

The Klingons are sooooooooo tame by today's standards. If TNG was in production today, there'd be so much blood and death because of klingons. How are they in Discovery?

Yeah, I guess I take all the series and movies together when considering a character. But his performance in "Conundrum" portrays him as absolutely capable of command.
