ive never had this problem because my xbox automatically downloads updates as they're released. maybe you should try turning the actual feature on

My consoles are off during the day when I'm out or sleeping. I'm not increasing my power bill because the Xbox One is dumb with updating games.

...what are you even talking about. how is it any different than the ps4

You can download an update and also play the game on the PS4. It just means the game is offline while it downloads.

If you're downloading a patch on the Xbox One it won't let you access the game at all until you get a message that it's ready. If you want to play the game immediately the only option is to go completely offline. Which means you can't play the game and download the update at the same time.

which will never be a problem for normal people. it costs 12 dollars a year to power an xbox for a year lol

I switch off the powerboard completely. I don't only own an Xbox One.

Regardless it's an issue for this specific console. The PS4 and Switch both give you the option to play the game while it is still updating.

Nope. I just switch the powerboard off when I'm done using them. Our power bill is lower than average which is pretty impressive considering all of the electronic shit I own.

PC

1. Basically every game from Atari 2600 to the PS2 for free, including 90% of all arcade games.

11. Your old games dont get left behind. Want to play an old PS3-era game? Fine. Click on it. No dragging a dusty PS3 out of the closet. You can play Destiny 2 and immediately close it to play Transformers: War for Cybertron.

People are fairly disingenuous about backwards compatibility on PC. It's great and way better than what the Xbox One offers, but it's not always as easy as just playing your old game.
Once you get to stuff that's like 10-15 years old it's easy to run into compatibility issues, get random .dll or other errors, and in some cases there's not anything you can do to get the game you already have to run without turning to piracy, buying a new version, or in some cases you're just SOL.

Don't get me wrong, it's still great to have it there and it has an infinitely wider scope than consoles have ever had, but it's not entirely reliable.

There's compatibility mode. I play old games all the time like CS 1.5, the first Deus Ex, and Total Annihilation

Chances are, if youre in the US, the power company isnt even reading your meter. Theyre estimating your power use. So as far as the bill is concerned it probably doesnt matter either way. But Mother Earth thanks you for not wasting resources.

I'm in Australia.

Either way I'm happy with my power bill and it's a good habit to have.

PS4 now, Switch in about a year or two. It has all the multiplats you'd want, plus tons of exclusives and it's only $200-$250.

thanks everybody for their opinions, it's all been very helpful

a high-end gaming rig/PC is ultimately what I want, but with my current budget of ~$500-600 I can only build a low/mid grade gaming PC

i might actually go that route, build a lesser quality gaming PC now that's still relatively powerful, and continue to strengthen/advance it's hardware components as time progresses
