I've had this Moto X Pure for about 1.5 years and I already have to replace it because the charging port accepts 2 out of the 20 micro USB cables I have, a common problem with this phone after awhile (and only one of those is fast-charging). I've settled on the OnePlus 5t and am hoping this one will last me more than 2 years, but fat chance getting updates from OnePlus later on. Also, enjoy all my data Chinese government!

I just think ALL smartphones suck with their typical lifecycle, including ones much better than mine.

Now I'm curious. What's the oldest smartphone CE is still using?

I still use a s4 mini as backup. Works fine and has excellent battery in airplane mode.

It's just a bit lacking in the power department.

Why buy just get a Samsung galaxy note

Too expensive. Even the $500 OnePlus is pushing it for me.

If I could expect it to last 5 years or something then ok, I'd eat the price.

The tech has pretty much stagnated. You can easily get 4 years, possibly 5, out of a premium phone right now.

Clarification: Premium non-iPhone. Apple intentionally bricks phones via updates to force upgrades.

I'm less concerned about power for longevity and more skeptical about battery life and a lack of security updates.

My previous 2013 Moto X also got totally crippled by it's Lollipop update and the battery suddenly could not make it past 3 hours of standby time. That was a a Google and Motorola flagship (right after Google bought them out).

iPhone

Used the 5s for 4 years until I upgraded to the 8

Yes sometimes the updates break things but a factory reset and iOS reinstall would get it working again

I'm considering an older budget model that Gizmodo recommended (the SE? I'd have to look it up). I really dislike iOS compared to Android but that's being picky, I guess.

Flip phone

I use too many functions on a smartphone to revert to that, both for my own purposes and for work (I'm always on call and need to be able to quickly write notes, dispatch jobs, access a good web browser to manage our work lines, etc.).

I'm also surprised very few people have Moto X phones after Google bought them awhile back and released the first as a flagship (before being sold to Lenovo). Anyway, they suck.

I still have OnePlus one.
Haven't had a single issue or crash.
Never had any performance trouble, either.

Got a new Galaxy S8+ a few weeks ago. Coming from an iPhone 6 Plus I'd been using for 2.5 years and iPhones in general since like 2009.

Definitely impressed with the Sammy so far. Just taking out of the box and holding it felt more premium than any iPhone I've ever had. We'll see how this thing holds up over time - I just hope software updates don't kill it like the way they did for my iPhones.

Pixel 2xl master race support for 3 years guarantee d at least. OneplusT is great for the price tho. Coming from a Windows phone for 4 years, pixel 2xl was a big upgrade in software(obviously hardware too)

why not just buy a 2nd hand flagship or something?

I got a P9 for like 250$ and it's doing awesome, the only damage is a bit of scratches at the back but it's not like I won't be using a custom case anyway. Way better than budget junk if you don't want to get ripped off.

After browsing Craigslist and eBay I might do this. Some good deals.

LG Optimus S, 7 years old - no issues.
Galaxy S3, 5 years old - no issues
Galaxy Note 4, 3 years old - no issues.
They last if you're careful.

Updates are another matter. iPhone users like to mock Android for having longer update lifespans but, as has been mentioned, those updates are outright designed to ruin older devices to force users to upgrade. Avoid no-name companies and go for ones which will eventually get their bootloader unlocked so you can throw custom ROM's onto them. My S3 has Nougat custom ROMs for it - which aren't designed to fuck the phone up and force an upgrade.

I take really good physical care of my phones. The only physical problems any have had are due to common faults with that particular model (for example, the Xperia Play is known for having a shoddy display connector and it's a common problem for the screen to show nothing but a static background after a while).

I mean they're okay, but just boring to me. The X has a new look to it with gestures and all, but it's still iOS at the end of the day. And the iPhone 8 line? Throw a case on it and use it for a day and it'd feel just as my old 6 Plus did.

This Galaxy S8 Plus I have now is an awakening in both hardware and software. 3 weeks in and I'm still learning about the biometrics, sensors, and customizability. They say Sammys are slow to get updates - good! Literally every single software update for my former iPhones brought them closer to their graves.
