I just downloaded NiceHash 2.0.13, put in a wallet address, and hit go. I'm only getting 250 H/s. My video card is only a 970 so it's a little old. Some of the references I've seen online talk about getting up to 20 MH/s though. Just wondering if there's something more to this.

Um you need a city of computers to make it worthwhile

I don't even know what mining is. What the hell does a graphics card have to do with it

the secret is getting free electricity and cooling. Sweden, Manitoba, and China are good places to mine practically for free

That's cool but I'm more wondering how to get a higher hash rate with what I have.

Realistically, your best bet would be to create a botnet and have other people pay the electricity costs.

Use the Equihash algorithm, the rest aren't worth it right now. Also, you aren't mining for Bitcoin with Nicehash but rather selling your computing power and being paid back in Bitcoin.

250 sounds about right for Equihash on a 970. The profitability currently is around a 1070 and you would need multiple of them, it can be worth it if you know what you're doing and have relatively cheap power where you live. You also need to do some overclocking in MSI Afterburner to make it much more efficient.

To the post above my last one, do NOT run the cards in SLI/Crossfire for mining. Just plug them all in and they will be utilized separately.

Why use Nicehash and "rent" your hashing power when you can just mine for yourself?

Many reasons. Nicehash is very simple to use and has convenient BTC payouts that can be converted to usable currency easily. If you mine directly for a coin you cannot do it alone as the chances of a block reward makes payouts wildly inconsistent, so you will have to find a good pool to be a part of. Nicehash cuts through all of that at a payout rate that is extremely competitive with just mining directly. You can use the following site below to see what is currently profitable and you'll see algorithms through Nicehash are right up there,
