It occurred to me yesterday that it would be very easy for people with MoviePass to skew the numbers we're seeing out of the box office. Members can see a movie every day using their pass, and the service will actually buy the ticket for you.

This means that if you want a movie to do better numbers, you can just stop by the theater and order one every day at no cost to you.

How many people have been doing this do you think? Has it caused outliers like Wonder to do much higher than expectations, or Thor Ragnarok to do much better numbers than the earlier movies in this franchise?

I doubt anyone spends their time doing shit like this. They're more likely to review bomb or whatever the opposite is than to do this imo.

While I've definitely returned to see movies more than once, it's typically because I'm hanging out with a different group of people.

In order to actually buy your moviepass ticket, you have to be AT the theater. Once you "check in" for the movie you have 30 minutes to buy the ticket.

So if you really wanted to inflate Wonder, Thor, or do some other nonsense garbage, that would mean every day you'd have to take time out of your day to drive to the theater and buy the ticket.

most people are not going to do this.

Do you physically need to enter the theater if it's an e-ticket? Like for AMC, it says I just need to be within 100 yards of the theater. So it sounds like I could easily just park in front for a minute and do it and then drive off. If not though I just need to walk in and scan my card so the ticket prints and then walk away.

This is all theoretical, I'm still waiting for my card to show up in the mail. But I'm thinking people like us could help Justice League's numbers if we all did it.

I thought they had a rule that you can only see a movie once. So of you used movie pass and saw Thor for example, you couldn't go back the next day and see it again with that same card

no you don't need to be at the theater for an e-ticket but if you don't go it gets refunded IIRC.

And I'm not going to help justice league's numbers because I'm not part of an imaginary war of marvel fans vs dc fans. I already saw the movie once, I'd go see it again if I had another group of friends who wanted to see it, but right now literally everyone I know already saw the movie.

Is that true? That would kill this idea and also lower the value of the pass itself, because sometimes I do want to see the same movie a couple times.

It's not a rule. Or at least it's not listed in their support documentation.

Thor did better than expected because it was better than expected.

Same with Wonder Woman.

There would need millions of people doing that for it to have any impact. Just one small group of people wasting their time doing that won't change a thing.

You know how you "help Justice League" TC?

Support better filmmaking. The movie is underperforming because it just plain doesn't look/isn't good.

Oh, cool

It isn't. I've seen IT twice and Thor twice. They used to have it where you couldn't see the same movie twice but they changed the rule shortly before the price drop.

I think studios could easily just pay moviepass money to buy tickets for their shitty movies without doing anything but write a check
