Open world games are a western value. I don't like just running around and doing anything I want all the time. Sometimes its nice to have a mission and be focused on it.

The linearity wasn't 13's problem

It was the garbage story, nonsensical pacing, trivial battle system that made some party members/synergys worse than others, and the "open-world" consisting of just fighting some big-ass monsters. The linearity was just the cherry on top of all of that

It being linear wasn't all that bad, cuz FFX did it too. It's just that the game didn't really let you rest in town to turn down the pace, or backtrack for side quests.

The story was fine. The combat however seemed to be hit or miss for alot of people, and unfortunately for most, the game and post game is almost entirely combat focused.

I replayed it eariler this year and enjoyed it a bit more than the 1st time, but by endgame, combat burns you out and they deliberately padded the post game objectives by not having enemies drop gil like normal. If you want good money, you have to set up a decent amount of stuff and pray for 10% drop that sells well

25% drop that you can turn into a 37.5% drop. But yes, if you want gil beyond the substantial amount that can be gained from treasures and sidequests, you're dealing with random drops.

I liked the story actually. The game had a good atmosphere too. The gameplay was sub-par though.

Agreed. The combat would wear thin for me after not even all that long. Still I think it gets a lot undue hate.

The sequels got progressively worse though.

It sucks as a Role Playing Game. I get not enjoying a game like The Witcher 3 where you have this massive open world where you'll get 20 side quests before you finish one of them, but that isn't what Final Fantasy games have been known for. A little distractions are okay, but in XIII you don't get that. It's just go forward, unlike the other 12 games before it

The vast, vast majority of the series was just go forward with the exception of the optional end game content.

Yes, with a world you can walk around in. Final Fantasy 1-12 had a world you walk around in. Go back to towns, fight random monsters, ect. There is a reason you have an airship in most of the games.

But this game is just 1 long hallway, never going back.

I was the opposite, The combat is some of the best in the series.

But fuck, does the story go absolutely nowhere.
