I love how the "hard G" option in the poll is literally just the term "gif" again. :D
And yes, that's the correct way to say it. I know the creator says otherwise, but he's wrong. He's just wrong.

I also insist on pronouncing meme as "mehm," like you would memo, minus the -o. I seem to be much more alone in that battle.

I switch back and forth, whatever I feel like at the time. Both have decent arguments that really prove nothing, so neither is wrong.

Every other person I've ever heard say it, whether in person or on tv/youtube/etc... it's always "meem," which sounds awful.

Actually, the word may be derived from the Greek word "mimma" meaning something that is being imitated - It should probably be pronounced "meem", as much as I prefer (and pronounce it) "mehm" myself.

Never knew this was a thing.
I'm Dutch so GIF is pronounced with a very hard G. (also gif means poison in dutch).
Geo and Gym are also pronounced with a hard G in Dutch.

Because of the word "gift" and "Graphics" (Graphics Interchangeable File Format) the hard G is the only option that makes sense.

that is precisely why I refuse to pronounce it any other way the first word in the acronym starts with a "g". i've always pronounced it that way but when I learned that, it just solidified my opinion on the matter.

I did used to pronounce it as "jif" when I first saw it used (just because the video I first heard that term used that term). Then I found out what it actually mean I switched "gif", I mean does anyone actually say Japhics.

Acronyms don't have to sound like the words the letters originated from. Example: JPEG. The f sound from photo is pronounced as a p is jpeg.

But jif for graphics just sounds silly and unintuitive. I've actually never heard anyone use jif.

Always pronounced it a soft G/chi.

didn't know about the greek origins but I actually learned the rest of that in a video game. villain kept talking about spreading memes. and it was a interesting concept as the game series in the past had focused on the villains thinking genes where the important factor in making a person who they where, this villain thought it was memes.
