I think I can name like 3 players now and its a problem when I interact with any adults that do not watch anime for 15 hrs a day.

I need to be able to say something like:

______ looks really good this season

______ is underrated

______ is a BEAST

I see ______ taking the ______ Conference this year

The problem with ______ is that they have no Offensive Line

Real answer: Don't bother trying to fake it. It's a dangerous tactic that will be harder to maintain than just learning the basics and admitting you aren't a big fan.

Youd learn most of that playing a season of fantasy football, assuming you took it seriously.

I always wondered why people take this approach.

If they like football so much than why not learn from them. Most people like teaching others about stuff they love. Think about something you love and how much of a joy it would be for you if someone came up and said "Can you teach me the basics of this".

Ive even created bonds by acting like I didn't know something just to strike up conversation. Anyone worth knowing won't judge you for not knowing something. It actually weeds out the assholes

"joe flacco is elite"

white runningbacks and wrs are "scrappy", "gym rats", "deceptively quick", "coaches sons", "hard hat and lunchpail guys"

whine about every flag and how the league is getting soft

call the fullback dive the "grittiest play in football"

randomly say "defense wins championships" in every scenario, such as when a field goal is being kicked

talk about how jimmy graham used to play basketball

call the wide receiver who just caught the ball "one of the best route runners in the league"

Honestly you could probably learn enough to pass as a casual fan by learning the rules, picking a couple teams you like along with a favorite team and a few you don't like. Besides that just learn the names of all the teams and any and all really well known players. Learn about your favorite team, The members, some general stats, etc. After that learn the general info on the rest you picked. Learn all the current famous and infamous players, recent scandals. Then, just watch some past games, especially notable ones, and keep current with the games from your favorite and we'll liked teams, along with and big games. Sounds like a lot at first, but you can do it in like two weeks.

Then just keep up with it from there. If someone else or a few others are talking about a game and you still don't know much, just tell them something like you aren't a huge fan of who was playing or you missed it because of something important. Maybe ask them to tell you what happened and who won, or just listen to what they're saying about the game. You can learn a lot from this too.

Just keep up with games and news after that
