There's certain stuff that's only available in each of the games. So if you don't complete special stuff like the doppleganger fight in vol. 1, you can't get its vol. 1 item in vol. 2.

no, .gu is awful. The gameplay in the originals was worse but .gu's horrible shounen anime storyline where nobody remembers they're actually playing a video game ruins the whole thing

I was always interested in trying out one of the Dot Hack series at some point.
