Jazz isn't dumb when it's good like Thank You Scientist and Snarky Puppy.

I don't really like jazz but I love jazzy hip-hop like the Digable Planets or Tribe Called Quest. Works better to a beat for me.

I do think jazz would've been cooler to me pre-rock and roll. Would've been epic to see a jazz legend playing in a jazz specific club in the early 1900's.

I'll contribute to this topic in a lil bit. I've been on quite a jazz spree the last couple days.

snarky puppy doesn't even call themselves jazz anymore

there are some grey areas and SP is definitely in one. never listened to Thank You Scientist so I won't say anything about that

anyway, I've been listening to Carla Bley's album "Social Studies" a lot lately. it's really good. I especially recommend the tracks "Copyright Royalties" and "Floater"

not sure how easy they are to find online, but I know a lot of jazz stuff and I can guarantee that everyone has a subgenre that they would like. maybe even a subgenre that they would like a lot. the problem is that there's not much jazz education, so people don't generally know about it

but if anyone wants any more recommendations, I've got lots. even if you want to give me the main genre you listen to, I probably know several jazz artists hat do or did something similar

I don't even know what shoegaze or dream pop are. if you give me an example or two, I might be able to help

but jazz shares a common ancestor with most pop music, so it's probably more likely that they've been influenced by a type of jazz

stuff like this that has that hazy dreamy quality to it

you might like Christian Scott. his album Stretch Music has some stuff that feels similar to that

and here's his Tiny Desk Concert for good measure:

he's contemporary. I wrote a paper tracing his musical genealogy back to pre-Louis Armstrong jazz, so I can show you some of his precursors if you dig it
