Peanut butter can and will go rancid. I think it's technically safe to eat, but it will taste terrible, and probably smell terrible as soon as you open it if it's rancid enough. I can't think of a reason I'd ever eat 48 year old peanut butter. Or even 2 year old peanut butter. Like, just to prove you could? --- Who's your favorite character from "Bend It Like Beckham"?
