The N64 was capable of using PCM, it's just that even compressed audio takes a ton of storage space which was a huge premium for those cartridges.

Music on the stock NES had five channels available, a triangle wave generator, a noise generator, two pulse channels and a channel for digital samples.

I was looking for the proper term. 8-bit isn't that, it refers to the graphics. Chiptune is what I was looking for.

Sorry, I'm not really that familiar with the game. If I had to wager a guess based on the cartridge size and type of game I'd say it's probably either entirely something like MIDI, or mostly MIDI with maybe an occasional PCM recording.

Some Nes games had voices, like Ghostbusters.
Anyway, I think midi is the best term for N64 music. Nintendo kept using it for both the Gamecube and Wii hardware.
