It's kind of obvious when you consider:

1. People don't tend to move far away from where they're born. Even now I think most people settle down and die less than fifty miles away from where they grew up.

2. Because of #1, people in remote communities with small populations are more likely to share family relations (however distant), compared to people living in more populous communities.

3. Because of #2, there is more familial intermarriage in small communities. Not usually siblings or half siblings, but occasionally cousins. Especially if you've got a big family. It's not even intentional, if you happen to not know the relative who happens to link you to your extended family, you may never know. Thing is, there's enough genetic diversity here that you're unlikely to see any of the suspect birth defects or characteristic genetic disorders (like the Romanovs and hemophilia, for example).
