I'm not sure anything apart from completely human extinction could collapse society permanently. People are going to eventually restructure society simply because the benefits outweigh the negatives.

Not having electricity for 48-72 hours.
Everything needs electricity, the plants that clean the water and pump it to our homes, our fridges, no internet, no phones (or other means of communication), you won't be able to pump fuel, no trains/subways, you won't be able to drive cars beyond what you have left in your tank, the list goes on. And then it's just waiting till anarchy/rioting begins. Seriously, to topple civilization 2-3 days without power will do it.
