There's obviously a problem with the design when people constantly complain about it and there being constant balance patches to try to address the issues that come with it

Remember in the days of TFC you could pick ANY class and you could win with it as long as you were good at the game?

Now FPS has been infested with this MOBA character crap where picking anything but the optimal groupings will result in your team just whining the entire match and a quick and easy loss

Competitive games should be solely about skill. Character choices should not have any infulence whatsoever on the outcome of a match

What does popularity have to do with mechanics and balance?

My argument is that the game would be improved if people could pick characters based on the appeals that make them popular rather than picking solely because of team composition of the allied and enemy team

TFC was rarely patched in the many years that it was active, because it was balanced. Fighting games rarely receive balance patches because they are mostly balanced. MOBAs and Character-Shooters like Overwatch/Paladins receiving several patches a month is poof of their flawed design

TFC = pick characters based on what you want to play with no regard to team composition. Be effective with whatever
Overwatch = pick characters based on role and counter picking only. Don't have roles that the game explicitly is warning you are lacking? "NO HEALERS"? YOU LOSE.
