As a kid I always just thought it was a song and any time he got included in a movie or something it was just supposed to be like an easter egg. My nephews and nieces think he's actually one of Santa's reindeer, but they don't think stuff like Frosty or Olive is real. It just never really occurred to me that there's a canon to which Christmas stories you're expected to think are real.

Did you believe in Rudolph as a kid? Obviously this question doesn't apply if you never believed in Santa in the first place.

Yeah for me the Rudolph song was the canon list of reindeer. I didn't know until later that he was just an add-on to the actual reindeer.
