Board 8 > Superhero Showdown: Will Justice League or Thor: Ragnarok be the bigger hit?

The holiday movie season kicks off today, but which title will emerge the winner in November's Superhero Showdown?

DC stunned the world by defeating both of Marvel's releases over the Summer; let's see whether they'll be able to keep their recent hot streak going.

For reference, here's how things have turned out for the studios over the last couple years (all numbers are the domestic gross).

DC
Wonder Woman - $413 million
Suicide Squad - $325 million
Batman v Superman - $330 million

Marvel
Spiderman: Homecoming - $334 million
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - $390 million
Doctor Strange - $233 million

With Thor and the Hulk making this a buddy cop adventure though, will Ragnarok perform more like Marvel's previous teamups? If so, we could be looking at a result more along the lines of

Captain America: Civil War - $408 million
Avengers: Age of Ultron - $459 million
The Avengers - $623 million

Should be closely contested, but my money's on Thor.

Justice League will likely pull in more money.

Ragnarok will probably do much better than the first two Thor movies though. It seems way more anticipated and to be getting waaaaayyyy better word of mouth and reception.

And it's really good!

Uh oh, Justice League will have its work cut out for it! The numbers aren't official yet but Thor looks to have delivered a very impressive $120+ million in its opening weekend. That's an improvement over Spidey's $117 this Summer and miles above Dr. Strange ($85) and the previous Thor titles ($86, $66).

This probably means JL is going to have to significantly outperform Batman/Superman and Suicide Squad to get the win, which I'm not sure it'll be able to pull off.

Heading into the weekend Thor is sitting at $155 million domestic, $510 million worldwide. Seven days until we find out if the 37% of B8 non-believers come out of this looking like Infidels, or Divine Prophets.

I wish Justice League would top Thor, and it's definitely possible, but I won't hold out hope for that. The only reason I would prefer that to happen is because success in the DC arena means more opportunities for different voices to come in and play around with B-listers and possibly craft tonally different films.

Worldwide will be a lot closer I think. I disagree that the Thor movies aren't box office draws, they've typically been middle of the road for Marvel. Given that the current average for MCU films (that is, phase 3 films) is 880 million dollars, that average gross alone would top Batmam v Superman.

WW did $413 mil domestic this Summer, to Spiderman's $334.

...but only $822 mil worldwide, to Spidey's $880. International audiences aren't warming to the new DC Universe as quickly as we did in the US, but I do expect their numbers to keep improving as the franchise continues.

I'll still rate it a little behind Thor, but it was very entertaining in its own right. Surprised the professional reviews have been so mixed.

Actually Wonder Woman was much less hyped than the previous films so it didn't have a huge opening weekend. It ended up doing the best of the series though, because word of mouth was so positive.

Now one his movies is beating the pants off a film about the Justice League. This is hilarious and kind of sad.

Tried to see Justice League today but their computer wasn't working or something so they canceled it and gave everyone two free passes instead. Oh well.

I might see it today. Thor was super good though and JL probably doesn't deserve to do better based on DCs track record.

Updated tallies heading into this weekend:

Justice League - $131 million
Thor - $261 million

I'm expecting a pretty decent hold from JL to cut into the lead though, Coco probably does very well for itself but that shouldn't cut into the super hero market too badly.

Oh, I saw JL the other night and I liked I well enough. Not as much as Thor though.

57% drop for JL, a little more than I would have hoped, but even so it managed a respectable 60 million over the five day holiday. Not terrible, and I bet it continues to draw well for the next couple weeks until Star Wars arrives.
