and my point is that a significant portion of the voting base is not listening and will never listen, and engaging with them is quite honestly a waste of resources.

the answer is to invest more in turning out those who will listen.

Then that's just where we disagree. I don't believe you can grow as a party in a 2 party system by shutting yourself off from a large portion of the voting population. Romney fell into that trap. Hillary fell into that trap. There are enough examples of it that it should be pretty obvious that it doesn't work. You can believe that some portion will never change their mind, but in a country where many elections are relatively close, it's not sustainable to consider them "forever lost". Trump is a perfect example of that given that he pulled enough left/independents that a few years ago would be in that "never going to get them" category.

More voter turnout CAN help, but it generally presumes effort to boost turnout only work on YOUR voters. The midwest has a few examples in this last election where boosting turnout ended up helping republicans instead of dems because the wrong voters showed up in larger numbers. It also makes the dangerous assumption that close splits on key issues aren't evidence that in reality the country is undecided, but that "my side" is the dominant one and it's just that "my voters" aren't speaking up when theirs are. It presumes a moral majority/mandate that may not exist and the numbers don't back up.

A large portion of the population are shut off from each party.

GOP has already figured that out. They are not trying to appeal to anyone in the democratic party tent.

Clinton actually tried quite hard to court GOP voters--she showed up in Texas and other states and pursued white women harder than any democratic party candidate in recent history. She tried to push the woman angle to win white women, typically a slim GOP majority, despite women as a whole typically going blue by a lot.

And she didn't invest nearly enough in turning out young white women, who do vote dem.

Honestly--she's decent at doing her job, but really sucks at campaigning. She is most popular when she is filling a major role and not in the public eye.

The moment she called any portion of the voting base deplorables and irredeemable she screwed over all that goodwill, though. Again: being a dick isn't a winning strategy.

Say what you will about Trump, but one thing he NEVER did was insult the voters. He insulted specific people, he insulted the democratic party, he insulted ideas, but he didn't badmouth the voters of either party. You may not believe me, but good luck finding a quote from the election.

Ah yes, then he too fell victim to saying something incredibly stupid. Luckily it was during the primary when there were a million candidates and individual comments were more easily lost in the noise. I don't defend that statement, although I'll admit I was wrong about him not insulting the voters at all during the campaign. My guess is he wasn't so loose with his words after he won the primary, although I could be wrong there, too.

EDIT:
But still, I stand by my core point: being a dick (to the voters) isn't a winning strategy.
