I was thinking of having Dexter kill himself after his sister died. when he's out on the boat with her body, he just lets the storm take him. I actually thought that was what was going to happen when i first saw the finale. better than being a lumberjack

with him dying.
we totally didnt need the extra ending.

alternatively, get him arrested.
his sister and the rest of the cast all know hes the bad guy at this point.
morally torn, they reluctantly allow him to execute one last guy (major criminal), which after he kills he turns himself over and is due processed.
however, off the record, he is congratulated for cleaning up what the cops couldnt. and goes to jail with his head held high.

What if Dexter sacrificed himself to save the city of Miami? Like there was a bomb he had to defuse, but defusing it meant that he would die somehow, like when the bomb is defused it releases some kind of toxic gas or something?

Dexter sacrifices himself to save the city. All his sins are forgiven and he is proclaimed a hero. Statues are created in his likeness, and schools and parks are named after him.

Here's how I would have pictured Dexter's final chapter, his fall from grace:

Dexter is an incorrigible monster, but most of his friends aren't. The supporting cast's ability to grow as people would eventually give them the edge required to understand that they've been played. Dexter would be confronted, not in a legal capacity, but by a few people--more people than have ever suspected Dexter of wrongdoing before--who would try to rattle Dexter, creating a chilling effect on his activities while they try to uncover the conclusive truth.

Everyone knows that the situation is fucked up, but uncertainty and emotion make it difficult to act definitively. Dexter would utilize his abject shamelessness to pit his friends against each other, and sow seeds of doubt. A few of Dexter's human friends are swayed by his deception, and so tragedy strikes them. Dexter believes he has won, but the side of the law nevertheless prevails, as Dexter's remaining friends have regrouped and become truly competent foes.

Dexter fantasized of a future where people might be more accepting of his crimes, believing that his reckless vigilantism may be justifiable. Dexter being arrested and put on trial would challenge that belief in the spirit of sane, modern justice. Dexter loses the trial, and is executed by lethal injection.

It's a very unambitious structure for the ending, but it's one that absolutely would have worked just fine, even with the mediocre writing of the later seasons filling in the gaps. I'm astonished that the show lost focus so badly.
