The more I think about Oblivion and Skyrim, the more I realize that I didn't really like them too much. Though I did fuck up because I played them on console. Now I have a PC and I'm thinking of getting Morrowind (Definitely getting an HD overhaul mod). Though I'm a bit apprehensive playing a game from '02. Would you guys still recommend it? If so, what mods should I get?

Morrowind is a great game, but you have to understand how the mechanics work before diving in. It's played in first-person, but the fighting does not work like a typical first-person game.

For example, when you attack someone in Oblivion and Skyrim, if your weapon hits the guy then it will damage him exactly like you would expect. In Morrowind, you might see your sword or arrow pass right through somebody but not hit at all. That's because the game weighs stats to determine whether or not an attack is successful. It's more like what you'd find in a JRPG or something like that.

It can be a little frustrating when your stats are low, but you'll get the hang of it.

It basically rolls dice like a DND game despite the first person view.

Yes, but there definitely needs to be a improvement how mods are implemented.

id atleast try it if those others didnt do much for you tho it also kinda depends on why you couldnt get into them.

get the Morrowind overhaul mod. from there you can play and see what works for you and what doesnt. generally theres a mod that will fix what you dont like so its a very personally thing that you have to see for your self.

it's not worth playing imo. morrowind is one of those games where nostalgia has made people hype up the good parts and gloss over the bad parts. morrowind was amazing at the time but it's a "you had to be there" type game

If you can hold out you should wait for Skywind.

Its a third party group that is recreating story, terrain, enemies, etc in Morrowind, but with Skyrims engine, graphics, and gameplay.

Oh yeah, this sounds like the best choice. I'm in no rush.

problem with those big overhaul mods is that its impossible to know when they'll actually come out. could be next year, 5 years or never.

Yeah, that is a huge issue with them. They flat out refuse to give an estimate at all. They claim its in its alpha phase, so, theyre close to being done. However, it could still be 2-3 more years before theyre confident to release it to the pubic.

I own Skyrim, but when this comes out Ill buy Morrowind just to download this mod.

Like I said, I'm in no rush. Morrowind is still gonna be there 10 years from now if I still want to play it.

I'm currently playing my first serious playthrough (Never made it far past a few quests in other playthroughs). I'm about.... maybe a little over 100 hours in and I have to say as an EXPERIENCE, it might be the best game I've ever played. Is the gameplay/combat good? No. But as an EXPERIENCE, this game has more to offer than any other. The way the game forces you to explore and get to know your way around the cities/wilderness is amazing. If you play Morrowind for as long as I have with my current character (100 hours isn't very long for an Elder Scrolls game), you will have an intimate relationship with the land of Morrowind.

I can't say the same about Skyrim. I can't give you directions on how to get to a place in Skyrim, because in Skyrim your character has a built-in GPS in his head and has no need to become familiar with the lore, history, or personality of the cities and terrain that surrounds him. Morrowind is much better in this regard, because by the time you finish the game, you will know all kinds of important things about the world that is so rich with lore and history that it feels like a real place.

So if you have time to dedicate to this game, absolutely play it. Take it slow, however. Do not try to beat it quickly. In fact, spend most of your time focusing on things other than the main quest. I've told myself this will be the last loooong video game adventure I take before I start getting serious and putting my life together. So I'm going to make the most of it. And if there is a video game that is worth postponing future plans for my life, it's Morrowind.

By the way I didnt start this run until a few months ago, and it doesnt matter that its aged like milk. Ive been able to enjoy it thoroughly without mods. You get used to the graphics within the first few hours of playing, and many parts of the world are still genuinely beautiful. The only thing I would consider modding is perhaps removing the cliff racers (If thats even possible). Such an annoying enemy. But Im an alchemist and I need the racer plumes for levitation potions.

TC if you do play, I have this advice. Youre going to get tired of playing eventually, and youll probably quit playing for a month or longer. When this happens, be sure to write down everything you plan on doing after you return from your break. Otherwise youll forget where you are in your adventure and what needs doing, and youll do the same thing I did for my first few runs: start over with a new character.

It's one of those love-them-or-hate-them games. I am in the first camp (and I didn't even play it until after beating Oblivion several times). It hearkens back to an era of games that I grew up with, however. It doesn't hold your hand (with quest arrows, enemies and loot scaled to your level or by funnelling you down a particular path), is heavily reliant on dice rolls, features a boatload of purely text-based dialogue, etc., and I wouldn't have it any other way.

It requires a heavy time investment and a lot of patience if you want to make good progress, to a far greater extent than Oblivion and Skyrim.

The game definitely has a lot going for it, like a detailed setting, a main story that combines fantastical elements with more grounded ones (like religion and politics), a great villain that actually feels threatening (despite you not actually meeting him for most of the game), a focus on hand-placed items and enemies over levelled ones, plenty of freedom in how you tackle quests and go about things generally, a massive amount of quality mods and a modding community that is still going strong, etc.

It has its flaws too of course, especially if you're used to modern conveniences like quest markers, extensive fast travel options and voice acting.

Mods are definitely recommended, even on a first playthrough. Good ones include:

Morrowind Sound and Graphics Overhaul (I don't agree with all the choices made, but if you want a good looking and sounding game with minimal hassle, this is the mod for you)
Westly's Pluginless Head Replacer
Less Generic NPCs
Tamriel Rebuilt
Galsiah's Character Development (if you don't like the regular levelling system)
Delayed Dark Brotherhood Attacks
Illy's Solstheim Rumour Fix
Uvirith's Legacy, Building Up Uvirith's Legacy, and Rise of House Telvanni for a Telvanni character (House Telvanni is my favorite Great House)
Lovely Loading Screens
Speechcraft Rebalance

In terms of bug fixes and optimizations:

Official patches
Morrowind Code Patch
Timeslip's Exe Optimizer
4 GB patch
Morrowind Patch Project
(installed in that order)
