Stupid Intruders

Writeups soon. Caught up in Extra Life. I'm enjoying this a lot, but a week off would be great.

Stupid Intruders

Steiner's 2nd and Mycro's 3rd, I guess. Thoughts later maybe, I'm passing out now.

Tegan and Sara - Dark Come Soon
Well-excuted buildup with an awareness to never run through the same configuration twice. No individual part of this is flashy or special but it forms a solid whole and after a few listens it really endeared itself to me. Very pleasant.

Lilly Allen - Never Gonna Happen
Between the accordion, that ubiquitous plodding bassline, and the "get lost, dude" lyrics I find it all a bit sour and uninviting. The whole carnival music vibe puts me off. Her voice sounds alright but I'm certain there's better avenues for it, at least for me to appreciate. As for now I'm a bigger fan of Alfie Allen.

Dirty Loops - Ta Fete
Catchy and strange, clean yet raw - is it progressive pop? Funky fusion? I've seen this keyboardist do a keyscape demo of his own but I didn't expect the group to sound like this. Gotta appreciate the portions - a more indulgent band might have taken 4x times as long to say the same thing and I'd give it a quarter of the views. Good musicianship all around, pretty voice too.

Baroness - A Horse Called Golgotha
I'll always think of these guys as Mastodon's more virtuous younger brother. Like many of their tunes this carries an anthemic stadium-rock quality ripe for crowd participation (same! HORIZON!) that really sets them apart from other sludge metal acts. It's all very extroverted. I love the changes in the last third of the song, full psychedelic guitar solo into reverb-drenched breakdown. The video is sick too, feels very 90's. Something Beavis and Butthead would have riffed on.

Yeasayer - Sunrise
I enjoyed their 2010 album but haven't payed attention since, going by this track they haven't changed much. They work texture like a less rabid AnCo with some dreampop juice, piling layers onto the barest of song structures until it mounts an undeniably cool vibe. Great bass and percussion work going on here. I almost wish the final minute lasted longer, had a good tropical melancholy feel.

Ella Riot - White Lies
Oh I had to eurodance. I was surprised to find that Ella Riot is actually My Dear Disco under a different name (big fan of Joey Dosik and Theo Katzman) but more surprised at how much I was into it for seven dang minutes. It's got such aerobic-friendly tempo you'd think it'd wear thin halfway through but somehow I never got bored. It doesn't hurt for me that it's got Katzman and Dosik on guitar and keys, or that it changes it up a bit in the final minutes.

The Decemberists - Mariner's Revenge Song
Depressing and ridiculous. Again with the accordion! I feel like if Colin Meloy dated Lily Allen they could write the most venomous breakup songs of all time using only a monkey and an organ grinder. I liked this type of thing on The Crane Wife but I think this tune suffers from all the bad side effects that can come with well-intended theatricality - acute melodrama, nauseating instrumentals, and lyrical diarrhea.

The Vincent Black Shadow - Stupid Intruder
A verse like a spy theme with the chorus of a Franz Ferdinand banger. Immediately accessible and deft pop that would be an effective show opener in both concert and television, I'm not hooked on this alone but it definitely holds my interest.

Huey Lewis and the News - Heart of Rock n' Roll
"Produced by the band, 'Sports' opens with what will probably become their signature song, The Heart of Rock n Roll, a loving ode to rock n roll all over the United States. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that gives the songs on the album a big boost..."

The chapters of American Psycho that disturbed me the most were the ones about Genesis and Huey Lewis and the News. I fear that I sound that way when I talk about my own favorites, that maybe people just think I'm crazy when I ramble on about Steely Dan's recording process or whatever. However I don't care for HLatN specifically and this song aint doin' anything to change that, as much as I enjoy Bateman's spirited appraisal. I mean if this was the beating heart of Rock in '83 it must have been in a coma but I know damn well the real heart of rock that year was ZZ Top's Sharp Dressed Man.

Calvin Harris - Cash Out
Ah yes I dig this production! Funky bassline, good use of the autotune in chorus, groovy piano ending w/ D'angelo style background vocals. Vintage but fresh, highly danceable and not a moment is wasted. This is my vibe all the way. I just wish I had more to say since it's my favorite of the week.

Haken - The Endless Knot
Gnarly axe pyrotechnics and another slightly Maynardish singer work for me. Succesful integration of the dubstep drop, sly almost. Mycro mentioned 5/16, I don't know how he counts that fast. I heard the 6/8 for most of it with a couple 5/4 sections and like a swung 4/4 at the end but that guitar line is just whizzing by. It does sound really cool when it drops back in though, really intense moment. I always thought these guys were doom metal for some reason but I'm glad they're more in the Animals as Leaders vein.

Yeah it's probably not the best way to describe that, it wasn't super wordy but the story just kept going like "oh and then some nuns hired me to keep the place clean" and I'm like shit I don't need to know this detail just get on with it

oh yeah and I totally agree with taking a week off since we're all falling a little behind and some of yous are doing a charity thing.
