It certainly not the government that started with the concept of monogamy. There might be a case before Christianity I can't remember, but I do know that the Christianity is pretty heavy on teaching monogamy and there are cases for it found in the bible.

Basically men want to spread their own genes as much as possible since this requires little to no investment and can be done basically indefinitely.

Women on the other hand want to select the best possible male because it's a huge investment for them to get pregnant and they can only do it a very limited number of times.

This is called bateman's principle.

I believe that many men (in biblical times) were allowed to have many wives (and even concubines), but that was to get the human race started (twice).

Now, it is just another way to make people pay for a license...or for them to get more money back from taxes. It's also a way for religious couples to devote their lives to one another, as long as their faith can last long enough before that inevitable divorce.

i agree marriage / monogamy is very useful for raising a few kids together, for about 15 to 20 years, then afterward its whatever - split up if they want i don't see that as bad.
