final fantasy 4

Same. I'd played FF1 on the NES before, but it wasn't very enamoring.

FF4 had some epic songs and moments and it was cutting edge graphical tech at the time, too. My top 3 moments to this day are: Departure of Kain and Cecil because Prologue is a great song, Cecil becoming a Paladin, notably by facing his old self and not attacking which I think is a very cool mechanic, and then Palom and Porom's sacrifice.

Nope. My bro was the one buying games all the time and he never liked the genreI still remember seeing LoDs as on TV and just dying to play it and begging my mom to buy it for me. I loved it and thats when I started playing the FF series. The first one I played was FF9.

By modern day standards it's a daytime soap opera, rife with cliche and a too-quickly rotating cast of characters. I still think it's a fantastic game and the DS/steam version is superior in almost every way.

Looking at it more objectively, it's still a midtier FF game imo. Trash-tier for me is FF2, 8, 10-2, and 13. (The 13 sequels are also auto-sorted here, but I haven't touched 'em)

You were one ahead of me. My first FF was 10. Didnt really like it tbh. Too linear and character designs/voice acting turned me off. But decided to play 7 and absolutely loved it. Then went back and played 4, 5, 6, 9, Tactics and loved them all as well. Havent liked any of them after 9, sadly... 15 made me want to vomit. And 13 wasnt much better. Combat in 12 killed it for me.

Probably Pokemon Red.

I didn't play many RPGs in my early gaming days (as I owned a Genesis, and when I played the SNES at friends' houses, RPGs weren't the ideal genre to play). It wasn't really until the 2000s when I started playing them a lot.

On the western side, Deus Ex and Diablo II were the ones I played religiously at the time. Later on, I went back and played Morrowind, KOTOR, Baldur's Gate, Fallout, System Shock 2, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, The Witcher, and so on.

On the Japanese side, I enjoyed the Final Fantasies (particularly 6-9), the Shin Megami Tensei franchise (particularly Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2, Persona 3 and Persona 4), Skies of Arcadia (Legends on the GameCube), the Tales of franchise (well, Phantasia and Symphonia), Dark Cloud 2, Grandia II, the Mega Man Battle Network series, the Super Robot Taisen franchise (Original Generation 1 & 2, A and Alpha Gaiden), etc.

I'm a bit of a "patient gamer" in that I play games on a delay. Most of the above games were no exception.

Chrono Trigger was probably my most loved as a kid.

Star Ocean: The Second Story...I remember watching my someone play it and looking through the strategy guide. Not sure what drew me to it, but with that game it was love at first sight.

I'm talking about in the RPG community in the US and Japan. It's the hipster shit nowadays and I always said FFV had the best gameplay in that trilogy and possibly the series. Like no hate on FFV over and it's not that far from FFIV.

Super Mario RPG

It was the first RPG I was aware of that was aimed at kids. I tried FF6 and a few NES RPGs before it, but they just didn't interest me at that age. SMRPG was simplistic enough with its plot and its equipment/inventory/stat system that I was able to figure it out, plus the added interaction during combat made it seem less boring. Also helped that Nintendo Power hyped the ever-living shit out of it before and during its release.
