Honestly, you'd be surprised how well a simply motion sensor light system is....that coupled with a sigh that says you have security cameras (even if you actually don't) takes care of a lot of the problem right there.

If you don't mind causing a disruption, loud sirens also help. Most alarm systems are silent and just notify the police. The threat of getting caught is what deters most criminals, and loud sirens attract attention / witnesses.

If it's a silent alarm, most robbers will be in and out before police can arrive.

then a really loud and annoying siren won't shut up

what would you do?

Get a sign even if you don't have an alarm, motion sensor lights at the front and back doors, and honestly a dog (or anything that makes noise) are usually strong enough deterrents.

As already mentioned, silent alarms are kind of useless. They might help with catching the bad guys, but something that makes noise and draws attention is much more helpful in scaring them off before they have time to grab much if anything.
