The more people there are, the more scarce land is. With the exception of some small new islands being created by China and a few other countries, no one is making new land.

Humanity would be wise to keep this in mind when it comes to population growth. People seem to be happier when land is cheaper, yet we are making it ever more scarce.

I agree that we have bigger problems. There isn't just one "the problem", I was just pointing out that this is something I worry about and that people should keep in mind. Climate change is a bigger threat for sure. I think we will have it sorted out by 2100 though.

Differences in culture.

In the US, it's not unusual for experienced society to warn young couples that they should approach parenthood in moderation, not race to fill a home with kids. In some parts of Africa, they're being told the opposite...that survival, status, and family success are dependent on popping out kids ASAP. And it's something nearly any couple can do regardless of wealth and status.

Basically these burgeoning African populations are still functioning on fundamental values that are more logical to follow when local populations are small. The "switch" was never turned off once they reached significant numbers, so they're going to keep breeding like rabbits until inevitable health plagues hit them.

Some cultures use baby booms specifically to fight health plagues by simply producing more offspring to counter the death tolls. And Africa's got a sizable variety of death tolls....

It's important to note that a lot of African countries are improving a lot in terms of poverty. The % of people who still live out in huts and stuff is not all that big, though that varies by country.

I've always found this an interesting reason people bring up as a reason people have multiple children (usually more than two).

Is it that hard to figure out having sex makes a baby? What is so confusing about this process that people need some sort of extensive education on?

I'll be long dead so whatever. But honestly people worry too much about overpopulation. Mother nature, the natural order, god, whatever you like really will balance things out. A new disease or plague will pop up and off a good half the population eventually. Then there you go, problem solved. We think way too much of ourselves if we believe we have that much of an impact on the planet. It's a living thing. It'll lance off the cancer growing on it someday if it gets to be too much a strain on it.

These projections fail over any sort of serious length of time. They don't take into account that more people are choosing to have smaller families, or to not have children at all, or are having children much later. They also have absolutely no way to gauge random variables like famine, plague, war, or disease that could significantly impact population.

This is just in the small percentage of wealthy developed countries...in poorer/developing countries people are still having tons of kids. They have litters of kids.
