A bunch of games in the past got high scores like gta4, mgs4, MGS5 , fallout 4 got high to flawless scores when they originally came out by professional websites. yet the general consensus from everyday gamers was that they werent all that great and there were many complaints about them

does this apply to breath of the Wild too?

not quite GOTY but definitely top 3 (behind Nier Automata and Persona 5)

Whether or not Odyssey pushes it out of the top 3 remains to be seen. I doubt it.

and yes, botw is 10/10, exceeded the hype, etc, amazing game.

BOTW was alright. Not bad in the slightest sense, but it still has issues needed to be addressed.

These ""professional websites"" are fucking jokes at reviewing games anyway. I don't have much trust for them.

Very solid but I'm looking forward to see how they move forward from this. I think a lot of fans appreciated the openness but missed big dungeons.

I like it, but out of open-world games to come out this gen, I prefer: GTAV remaster, MGSV, and The Witcher 3

it was amazing. i still miss the old zelda style of getting key items for dungeons but BotW is the future format. but i'd like it to go back to having 8 main dungeons. the dungeons was honestly the only weak part to me. there's nothing really to them. cool gimmick but needs some enemies and mini bosses at least.

- Six different enemies total

- Weapon breaking system

- God awful "dungeons"

- Literally 95% of the game is shrines

Once you realize all of these things you discover the game is boring as shit.

Its truly spectacular.

It didnt 100% scratch the traditional Zelda itch, but it still blows my mind just how much freedom the game affords you. I spent more than 50 hours just aimlessly wandering before I even headed in the direction of a dungeon, and the gameplay engine truly reflects if you think it could work, it probably does.

Yep. I still liked it but it really wasn't as satisfying of a game as it could have been.

It has its flaws, every game does. But it also has a ton of good stuff, and a lot of what is good is REALLY good.

If you enjoy exploration in games, that is. Because of this, simply not everyone is going to like BotW.

Really good game, but it's no longer game of the year for me.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is my GOTY candidate now.

I like Nier and Persona 5 but there's no way Odyssey isn't better than those games.

i dunno. it looks fun but at its heart its just gonna be a collectathon
yes, a great collectathon. maybe even better than Galaxy. But collectathons inherently aren't as good as open worlds, action RPGs, or JRPGs (imo)

It honestly is the Zelda game I've been waiting most of my adult life to play, so much so that I still kind of have a hard time believing it exists (given the direction of the series after it went 3D). It's got some flaws that keep it just short of absolute perfection, but on the whole they're pretty negligible imo.

It's fun, but I was really missing the dungeons/boss fights. I just felt like the story/plot wasn't there which is surprising as this one had voice acting.

Personally, after awhile, LoZ dungeons and boss fights felt like they were becoming nothing more than set pieces to showcase the dungeon's unique item, an item which half the time would become nigh-useless after its dungeon was completed. Sometimes this was fun and exciting, but it became too structured and predictable. Getting stumped by a puzzle? Odds are your shiny new item is the ticket out.

This is why, for me, the shrine structure was a breath of fresh air (and a spiritual successor to A Link Between Worlds' excellent item mechanic): you are given all of your powers in the opening act, which allows you to use all of them in creative tandem while opening each shrine up to a unique and unpredictable challenge. Figuring out on your own that you have to use Magnesis to balance this lever or Cryonis to raise that gate is more rewarding to me than being guided through a setpiece dungeon.

In fact, one of the things that occasionally disappoints me in BotW is its adherence to what little structure remains, which can make exploration predictable. So you solved some great wilderness puzzle or noodled your way through a riddle? Your reward is almost exclusively a shrine. Throwing a few monkey wrenches into this formula would have gone a long way (for instance, I was really expecting / hoping to get some kind of Triforce power for gaining access to the Courage, Power and Wisdom Springs).

As for the plot, I haven't been let down so far on that front because I've never really considered the Zelda franchise to have strong plots - Wind Waker takes the lead in this regard, but even at its highest points the element is still easily secondary to the gameplay. I think the base plot is very good, and gives a nice bit of melancholy to your travels when you wander a ruined world that you yourself failed to protect. I might be a little biased because I ended up doing the Zora questline first, which so far is heads and shoulders above the rest (haven't finished Gerudo and Rito yet, but the Goron questline was considerably weaker). Admittedly though, the voice acting is unnecessary and sounds PS2-era quality at times.

It's not even the best open world game to come out this year. That goes to Horizon.

Still a great game overall, but way too many flaws. The fact it's so open almost hurts it to an extent. There aren't enough dungeons or enemies. The weapon system and weather system are nothing more than annoyances and outside of heart/stamina upgrades it feels like there are no rewards for exploration.
