yea, the director said that it'll be more of a horror movie.

it's directed by the guy who did Fault In Our Stars, btw.

I don't think that can be stated enough by what I just saw from that trailer tbh.

"This isn't a hospital, it's a haunted house!"
Somehow that seems like a step down. I feel like being trapped in a hospital for dangerous mutants and trying to survive is more interesting than whatever that line is implying.

That I know. I think at one point the the writing duo behind the Fault in our Stars (and 500 Days of Summer) were also writing the script. Now a couple of no names are credited for the screenplay.

Edit: I overlooked. One is the director Josh Boone and the other is some no name producer with a short, shitty film track record.

I know who Demon Bear is and, yes, I know he serves as a psychological threat, especially to Danny Moonstar who's powers includes tapping into people's head and manipulating their reality. But the New Mutants have never been a full on asylum horror.

After reading more about it, I kind of feel bad for the director because he was, apparently, a huge long time fan of the new Mutants as a kid with his own plan on how he wanted to do the film but it was the studio's call to turn the film into this new "Stephen king/John Hughes" horror direction. He's even admitted that he hate horror movies.

So unlike his initial plan, he have to do both a tentpole and a horror movie, both of which he have no real experience with and one he doesn't even like.

Demon Bear definitely had a horror vibe going and was definitely set in a hospital. Was it a full-on bloody and terrifying horror? No, but this isn't either going off that trailer.
And guess who the movie's villain is?

Demon Bear

Now it's "based" on Demon Bear, just like DoFP was "based" on its namesake. But at least they got the tone right
Hope the director's personal feelings doesn't affect his work much. I really want this to be good so Hollywood realizes not all superheroe movies need to be Lethal Weapon.

It had a horror vibe, sure, but it was nowhere on this run of the mill horror movie level. The only thing that differentiate this from things like the Conjuring or Insidious is that it have the X-Men/Marvel label. I will admit, it is unique for those kind of films though.
It all comes down to the director in the end and sucks that they have to fuck with whatever it was he was doing initially. Hopefully he can bring it together in the end. Plus he got Simon Kindberg breathing down his back and that guy is the worst (when it comes to some of these X-Men films).

It's a new and fascinating approach for the franchise, so it's at least caught my interest.
