in the novel they were pretty much shellshocked and horrified from hearing IT has come back when they were perfectly fine with coming back to Derry. I mean one of them even killed himself

these were grown ass men. They were at least 38

None of them quite understood. All that was there was terror, no real memories.

they were supposed to have overcame their fears with it but they seem more scared of IT as adults than they were as kids

I'll keep reading but that part just kind of bugs me. Bill and Mike seem like the only two who were ready for this, the rest are like "Do I have to? I don't wannaaaaaa"

I mean, adults are afraid of facing things that hurt them as kids IRL though. It's not that unusual to carry your fears into adulthood. Like if you were mauled by a dog or almost drowned you'd likely be afraid of dogs and swimming as an adult.

The Losers haven't been training all these years so they're actually weaker than they were at the Cell Games.

That's not fully accurate.

Though this is kind of a major point. Kids are more flexible in their thinking, can incorporate new information, so what if there's potentially a child eating monster roaming around, I can still go off to the penny candy shop and enjoy myself or head over to a Saturday matinee. It doesn't break my conception of reality because I have none yet.

lmao

On topic: It can control peoples subconscious, which is why despite hundreds of people going missing in Derry, no one ever really treats it like a real threat. It has forced the Losers Club over time to forget that It ever existed, weakening them.

It is, hence why everyone that left became really successful while the one that stayed made a modest living. And IIRC, he was the one that picked up the phone to let them know shit was about to pop off again and they needed to be there.

well I don't think pennywise is like hard locked to Derry because he helps Bowers escape and its implied he had a hand in Stan/Macklin, but just limited power it seems that he can't actually start terrorizing other places otherwise he would have like an infinite supply of people to feast on.

I dunno man its just guessing at this point

You can basically think of Derry as its own sort of reality in a way. The moment people leave they slowly forget until it's gone completely keeping the secret of It

I thought it only stayed in Derry because if IT left and went to other towns, the Turtle would get alerted to it's presence and proceed to kick it's ass again.

I think the Turtle dies in The Dark Tower series? Pretty sure in It the Turtle is boosting the strength of the Losers Club which is a big reason why they are able to defeat It.

They were so shocked because they'd forgotten pretty much everything to do with IT, and like covxy said, kids are more flexible in the way they process ideas and concepts because they have less to compare them to. The double-whammy of getting an enormous childhood trauma freshly dumped on you and being old and set in your ways and faced with something seemingly impossible and highly terrifying is why it was such a big deal. And the least flexible of all the kids (notable in the way he describes his own encounters with IT as a child, mostly in just utter disbelief and how he felt practically offended with how ITs existence broke all the rules he knew to be true about reality), Stan, obviously took it the hardest.

Mike gets the easiest pass on being okay with having to re-fight IT because he never left Derry, so he never lost his memories and he's been able to see Derry life as the years go on, he's been busy researching IT and it's influence on the town throughout history, and he's there to see the cycle begin again firsthand.

Bill is understandable since he had such a big stake in defeating IT (vengeance for his brother), and because he's always been the natural leader of the group and even as a kid has always had the will and the drive to get things done.

Yeah but that was just the first part right? Wasn't it when they were adults he did the ritual again and saw the turtle dead or something

Thinking about IT. I think It would have been scarier if their lives outside of Derry were worse. Like they didn't end up getting to do their dream jobs, and IT made them feel like they belong in Derry.
