Their games are always well made BUT isn't it weird that all reviewers love every franchise/characters nintendo makes? I've never understood the appeal of Mario as a character and i really need to like the characters i play AS not just have well made games. Being well made is just an aspect to gaming for me - am i alone in this?

Example-sly cooper and co are just more clever and the side characters are more interesting in that series...

They have a lot of really solid titles. It doesn't seem like they are given overly easy marks for stuff though. I don't recall any of the New Super Mario Bros titles really getting a lot of hoopla critically.

To answer the second half of your sentence: No, it's not weird. If you consistently make good games, reviewers will rate them highly for being consistently good.

Do people find Mario funny? Inciteful? What's the appeal?

What's so amazing about zelda? Do people really like and identify as these characters?

If anything the Nintendo hate has been getting more toxic and obnoxious lately, to the point that it's rivaling the blind Nintendo love.

I love Nintendo but I can admit that they can fuck the hell up.

All I know is they have nothing lined up for 2018. People praise them now but watch their 2018 draught and people lose confidence in them.

Mario is not about character, it's about game mechanics being basically the pinnacle of 2D platformers for well over a decade.

Zelda is great at world building and telling an interesting story about that world. While each character represented is basically a cliche archetype, the world is interesting, and usually the villain is pretty interesting as well.

Actually the more right leaning posters seem to like Nintendo the most.

Probably because they don't contain left wing agendas in their games.

About Mario -- why wouldn't you want or expect both from a game? People just play mario for the gameplay facet.? What an empty reason. It has sustained and endured because the jump physics are spot on? I think i play games for different reasons than nintendo fans. Note - I don't "hate" mario im just using him as a Nintendo example...i just don't understand the heaping praise for 30 years.

Not really, no. It's just that some fans think that any amount of criticism, or someone saying a game is bad means that person hates Nintendo and wants to persecute all fans. People legitimately "hating on" Nintendo are a vocal minority at best, and barely even that vocal in comparison to all the fans that gush over everything the company makes.

And I say this as a longtime Nintendo fan who (to this day) buys a majority of the games they produce, because I do indeed think a majority of their games are well made.

Did story help or hinder the Sonic series?

Do you expect complex character depth in a game about a plumber rescuing a princess from a spiky turtle king?

Apparently. People play Mario games because they're fun. Not every game needs a story to keep peoples interest. Great level design and fun platforming is more than enough.

The games are solid but not worth buying the gimmicky underpowered hardware to play

Though Nintendo consider themselves a toy company first and a game developer second so I don't see that changing any time soon

By constantly evolving and defining an entire genre for decades? That's not exactly an easy feat.

I'd say it helped Sonic, but I guess that's besides the point. Who said you need a "complex" character to have a story? Mario & Luigi Superstar Sage is the perfect example of how Mario with a story could look like. Has the charm and humor of any other Mario game, but a legitimate story that is continuous throughout a series of games.

Hell, what they're doing with Odyssey and what was done with Galaxy is a step in the right direction imo. Just needs to be connected. If there was a little more exposition, they wouldn't be too far off from the "Sonic" series you're comparing it to.

Odyssey's premise and theme reminds me a lot about Sonic Unleashed. Mario (Sonic) meets a cute new ally that may or may not be connected to the final boss, and the two travel the globe to fix the turmoil their respective villains have caused.

I literally just played a game where Sonic jumped into the Presidents limo so he could infiltrate a moon base that Eggmans father developed.

Mario should never do anything like that and it has never come close.

That's kind of the problem I have with them lately. Last year the 3DS upcoming games looked completely dead, but every few months a couple games get announced and shortly released. With the Switch they have a bunch of games with no solid release dates, so you're basically being strung along for years hoping the games you actually want might be coming out soon or next year. You'd have to have the attention span of a lemming to put up with that shit.

It's done plenty of stuff. It's just based around gameplay concepts instead of story and character development.

Mario Galaxy's world makes no sense. Neither does using a hat character to possess people. But who cares? It's fun. That's what matters. That's why Mario has stuck around for this long. Varied level design and concepts.
