You say this as if everyone wasn't a racist, evil piece of shit.

Like, imagine actually getting upset over Christopher Columbus in 2017. Do you people honestly have nothing better to do with your time?

Most people didn't get jailed for their racism. Why was Columbus?

And lol @ getting triggered cause modern Americans don't want to worship someone only honored for his discovery in the 50s cause a bunch of Italians were desperate for a figure to venerate so they tossed darts at a dartboard and found someone.

his first English language autobiography in the 1920s

You mean it was first translated to English in the 20's? I doubt he was writing autobiographies 200 years after sailing.

Black Legend. Look it up. A lot of the smearing of Columbus was done by other European countries trying to gain power in the Americas by publishing propaganda about Columbus to make him looked bad.

He had 1500 people with him, many weren't even soldiers, and a year later famine and disease killed 2/3 of the settlers, but somehow he was able to kill millions of people. Of course, some people will ignore this and attack this man's accomplishments that changed history.

Stumbling into an island, thinking it was Asia, and introducing the slave trade and European diseases to the Americas? Getting arrested for being a jackass by 15th Century standards? Someone get this man a holiday. Einstein doesn't even have one of those.

Except that Columbus didn't knew about the diseases. The settlers also brought syphilis and other diseases back to Europe. The only difference is that Europeans had better immune systems due to greater exposure to diseases. It doesn't matter if he thought it was Asia. Some of the greatest discoveries were discovered by accident.

The man earned his place in history. He was a master navigator who accomplished some great things in history. Some people on this board wouldn't even travel out of their parent's basement, let alone sailing across oceans without any modern equipment.

Im a libertarian and I personally find it appalling that we still continue to look the other way when it comes to Washington and Jeffersons transgressions yet we cant seem to talk up the accomplishments of MLK and Bill Cosby without someone mentioning homophobia or rape.

Not to mention there were plenty of GOOD people that founded this country that werent slave owners, rapists, or mass murderers.

Well that answers my question. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, we're coming for ya!

I'm not saying he did literally nothing, but a man who stumbled into an island 300 years before the US was founded and was a giant shithead doesn't deserve to have a holiday over almost everyone to ever step foot in this country. It's debatable if he was even first and Vespucci literally proved him wrong within a decade. He shouldn't even be in the Top 1000 choices for American holidays.

so what's the difference?

both men have either directly or indirectly killed many, many people.

He is more worthy. Actually stepped foot in America, did a lot of great things for our knowledge of science, didn't actually kill people. Modernizing physics and thinking we should build a bomb in case Germany has one is not even an indirect implication in deaths.

Do you blame gun inventors for murders? People who casually say they wish someone was dead?

Those islands were part of the Americas. He opened the door for other explorers and other European countries to shape what America is today. Vespucci only took a risk that Columbus took almost 10 years earlier. Don't hate the player.

he didn't only write a letter, being the most notable physicist in history and his work which lead to the splitting of the first atom.

paved way to the bomb, which he endorsed whole heartedly and being he was fucking Einstein that letter held a lot of weight to Roosevelt.

and I'm not endorsing Columbus over Einstein. Einstein is just as important to world history as anyone else.

I have no problem with the truth of Columbus being made more public.

But I just have a problem of trying to revise history and people discredit his achievements.

because despite "stumbling" onto the Americas he was still a gifted explorer. He still had a part of colonizing the Americas.

also, is this the slope we reallllllly want to start sliding down?

you could undoubtedly find skeletons in anyone's closet. So that's why I get annoyed. why is one person ok to ridicule and condemn but others are not? as others have said, you might as well tear down our founding fathers.

Just stupid people acting stupid. They act like he had control over what happened. The settlers also unknowingly bought diseases back to Europe. It could have been Vespucci if it wasn't Columbus. If Columbus brought flowers, candy, and gifts and only wanted to exchanged ideas, the diseases would have still spread the same way.

Maybe they were. Don't you want future generations to have a nuanced, realistic view of history instead of a whitewashed, Disneyfied version?

Anyway, Washington's and Jefferson's legacies are secure. They actually did do a lot of great things and have actual accomplishments to their name. They founded the actual country after all, unlike Columbus. You don't have to worry about people coming for their statues, dearest Glitter.

One thing that never gets mentioned in your US history classes is that one of the major reasons this country was founded upon was the disagreement between Britains pro-abolitionist movement and the colonies reliance on slavery for most of its economy. Just remember, mass slave owners like Jefferson didnt fight to support the greater good and go against big bad Britain - it was because he might have lost his slaves.

Okay. Was he arrested for cruelty based on his time?
