Dark Souls is a western game, yet has more in common with western RPGs than it does with JRPGs. Fewer unlockables are unlocked through actual gameplay, because why not just charge real money for them? And why release a complete game when you can just lock story content behind season passes? Obviously these design choices have long-term consequences, but greedy publishers are too inept to consider the long haul.
