Can't you warp between the starting village and Gran Soren using ferrystones?

Don't do something just to do it if it's making you bored. Also use the stone that lets you teleport back as much as you want. That's why they added it. Side quests are not important. They are just something extra to do.

Most side quests are garbage IIRC. One does give you a really good great sword that can basically last until post game if you wanted

I would say you are, you can backtrack but you should do as much as you can before heading back some side quests can wait, they're side quests not mandatory every game has filler side quests that usually consist of killing a number of enemies, collecting a number of items, etc....Look up quests and items that can be missed and as you play the game the side quests will be getting completed.

Port Crystals can be used infinitely. You pick it up and put it down as you please and use the stone to teleport to it or the main cities

Portcrystals let you set your own warp point IIRC and you can always pick it up and move it somewhere else later. You can buy ferrystones from someone in Gran Soren.

They act as markers. You use stones (Or the infinite use version if you got the bonus) to teleport to them

when you get to gran soren, hit up the inn and check your storage there. there's an infinite ferrystone which you can use to teleport between portcrystals you place around the world. you can place up to 10 but only like 5 or 6 can be found in a single playthrough. there are good strategic locations to place them for convenience's sake which you'll pick up on after playing the game for long enough, but be in for some long treks till then...

as for gear, most of the good stuff you'll buy from the blacksmith early on. search everywhere for chests too.

also don't get too OCD about the side quests... notably the notice board ones. so many just aren't worth the time and item investment. just check the rewards they give and do what you need to.

You literally posted that right after you got the answers to how to avoid having to run back and fourth. That makes it look like you just wanted to complain more than actually get answers.

use gran soren as your first home base. there's a port crystal there by default so it will act as your hub world for all your adventures early on (well, for the whole game really). there's no need to worry about the return journey, just venturing out. take a different path/quest/hunt each time.
-complete your quest
-loot everything
-ferrystone home
-turn in quest
-sell and restock
-set off on next quest.

that's dragons dogma until you hit bitterblack isle. place further portcrystals at locations close to healing springs and merchants, or quest givers. Late game I keep 1 or 2 spare and place them at locations for the escort missions in advance (shadow fort and bloodwater beach) for instant completion... fuck those escort missions.

it shouldn't take you 6 hours to wrap up the encampment and village quests though... theres not many in the first act of the game.

i put my favorite portcrystal locations on this map... no particular order of importance. but i have one on each of these locations and one in my inventory on my current game and experience no backtracking or tediously long journeys now... kinda takes the soul out of the game tbh
