I just read this in a kpop fanfic about IU and it totally broke my immersion. There's no way IU would be low IQ enough to make this kind of error and I trust that the author isn't trying to subtly make fun of her through this so they definitely think it's somehow correct

HOW
HOW CAN SOMEONE THINK "COULD CARE LESS" ACCURATELY DESCRIBES WHAT THEY'RE TRYING TO CONVEY
I don't get it
do people not proofread anymore
do people not think about the words they're using? kfc

Yeah it's a strange one - you're literally stating the opposite of what the figure of speech is intended for.

If you have the capacity to "care less" about something then you're literally stating that you DO currently care about it.

When I was a kid, I heard an adult say this and I was VERY confused. It turns out, it doesn't actually make sense.

Both "could care less" and "couldn't care less" are ambiguous statements.

Couldn't care less could also be interpreted as you being unable to care less because it's important to you.

Just fucking say "I don't care."

No native English speaker would inflect the sentence in a way that implies this

It annoys the fuck out of me when people write "would/could/should of" - like how do you not realize that it's supposed to be a contraction? Ughhh

I have always taken it to be very purposefully ironic, because when you are saying that to someone you are intentionally trying to convey that you don't care.So when you are saying "I could care less," you are implying that you care so little about it that "Yea I COULD care less."

Logically "I couldn't care less" would be the proper way to say it.

But honestly it just sounds weird and could "I could care less holds" the same meaning and sounds better(even if logically it's wrong).

You are both wrong
The harshness of the n't compared to the roundedness of the rest of the word gives it an edge that compliments the meaning
