Netflix and Hulu aren't the same thing, guys. Hulu will air the newest episode for some network shows. Right now I'm watching The Mick, Ghosted, Designated Survivor on there. They get put up in the middle of the night, presumably after it airs in Hawaii's time zone, then I can watch the next day. It also has full seasons like Netflix, which they're vying over... but that's basically the intention behind the commercials. I could watch Saturday Night Live on there, for example. Or stand up comics, comedy/news shows.

okay well let me know how that goes

It would help if people like you stopped supporting the ad model. Stop it.

there is nothing to help. support for the ad model doesn't need to be stopped.

Maybe it doesn't "need" to, but things would still be better if it was.

People are scoffing at the tiny, $1 increase, but this is a really ballsy move by Netflix. They've been hemorrhaging content lately, yet they want more money? A couple months ago they lost virtually all their content from Fox. Currently they're losing all of their Disney content. That is all on top of the content they've already lost the last few years too.

They shit out more originals than I can keep up with, and they have far more misses than hits. I've been subscribed since the monthly price was $7.99, and included BOTH streaming and DVDs. If this trend continues I may have to cancel my sub. I hope this doesn't come back to bite them in the ass.

their "no ad" version still has ads.

Looks like it's just pre-rolls?
That's not too obnoxious, I guess.

On its own, $1 isn't a big deal and won't break anyone's bank.

However, when you add in the fact that they just raised their prices less than 2 years ago, and that almost every other subscription service is raising their prices pretty consistently (i.e. Pandora, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc.), and the addition of new subscription/streaming services, this sets a pretty concerning trend.

Once you take into account your movie streaming, music streaming, games streaming, and every other subscription-based service out there, you could be shelling out $100+ a month just on subscriptions.

Why would you pay for any of those things when you can get all of that for free?

it wouldn't though. if Hulu didn't have the revenue it gets from having ads, then it would be hemorrhaging licensed content just as badly as Netflix is. Hulu recently acquired exclusive streaming rights to i think all if not almost all of the '90s TGIF family sitcoms, and to a bunch of FOX cartoons before that. not to mention the deals it has to stream new episodes of many currently airing broadcast shows the day after they air. none of that would be possible without the ad revenue.

So as more and more people cut the cord, you think companies won't license their shows anywhere? If Hulu goes, it's either Netflix or nobody's going to watch your show. That's the ultimate end point

This is why I will never pay for a subscription service. I hate not owning a copy of something and being able to access it after a one-time purchasing charge.

Paying for water, electricity and phone is bad enough, f*** paying for any media past the upfront cost.

It is an odd thing to do when theyre losing content but I guess they figure their original shows and movies are worth that price.
