I haven't watched it either, so I don't know all the details, but it's basically this.

For a few seasons, they'd introduced the titular mother and had her around. Fans liked this character and were happy that she was the mother the entire show was about. And then in the last part of the show, set in the future, she dies and Ted's kids tell him that he should pursue Robin, the woman he had an on-again-off again relationship with for much of the show.

Additionally, NPH's character Barney had grown as a character and fallen in love with Robin. I think they even got married, but I'm not positive about that. But Robin had to be with Ted, so she and Barney broke up and he returned to his womanizing ways.

They got married and then divorced, and one of his one night stands got pregnant and dumped the kid on him and it changed his whole life.

They essentially retconned a relationship in which the entire last season was about just so that they could create a cop out ending that was 'happy'.

Shoulda just left it at the fact that the mother was dead, end of story.
