He goes out to a rally and wants to get an easy applause from the patriotic audience, so he dusts off his old catch phrase and says "Those players who kneel should be fiyad"

Of course, it's wildly idiotic for the president to suggest that a private business should take action against their employees for political reasons, and even though he probably didn't think it through hard enough to realize his words smacked of authoritarianism, that's what it did. And now, smelling blood in the water, Democrats have seized that ball and ran with it.

But here's the thing: this is not a down-the-middle issue like Dems vs. Reps usually is. Kneeling during the anthem is and always has been a tremendously unpopular political stunt. Almost nobody who actually watches football likes it. The Patriots got booed by the entire stadium because some of them knelt over the weekend. A largely unknown lineman for the Steelers' shirt soared to the top o the sales charts only because he was the only one on his team to not turn the anthem into a political stunt. The anthem protest is the #1 reason people have stopped watching the games.

And now, thanks to Trump's antics, the Democrats are now the champions of the least popular political movement in recent memory. And he didn't even mean to make them do that.

Correct, but the anthem protest will be around long after people stop caring about Trump's offhand comment at a speaking event.
