...The same can be said about literally any game genre. "The story? Who cares? I get hard just from this gameplay!"

It's a shooter, who needs a story? Oh wait, BioShock, Mass Effect, etc. Where would we be without them?

Well most shooters started as narrative based games. They've only recently started to become competitive. FPS was mostly done for immersion.

Fighting games have for the majority of their existence been competitive.
