Instead of a smallish number of nice big levels, there've been a large number of small levels.

64 - 15
Sunshine - 7

This was really good. There was plenty to do in them, and they were generally a lot of fun.

Galaxy 1 - about 40

To be honest, Galaxy 1 was still a great, if not excellent game, but it would've been nice to have had less levels, but bigger and a bit more to do. I know most people probably prefer more but smaller levels, but I think it's a little sad. I mean, there are about 8 - 10 main "themes" in levels, in platformers, so you can have one of each of those in something with about 10 levels.

The levels in SM64 are really small compared to most other free-roam style 3D platformers.

Anyway. The levels in Super Mario Odyssey are so big to the point where there is a fast travel system.
