I thought Discovery was going to an online thing only. Is this a one off thing to get us hooked so we'll subscribe? And if so will US also be getting the pilot?

afaik, CBS all access is a US only service. so, Americans have to subscribe to get more than the first episode. outside the US, networks were allowed to get the broadcast rights, which in Canada is likely Space.

Boom! That's right, this is all happening! You cannot change the channel now!
Act now! Venchmen are standing by for your orders!

Hmmm, CTV is getting it. Maybe Space is too.

personally I wish it was more ambitious than just another standard Starfleet adventure. it's just gonna be the same stuff we always have seen, it's just set 10 years before the original show. which means it's not even the earliest setting cause of that other one, Enterprise which was like 100 years before Kirk I think. anyway, I always have been wanting something more ambitious like how about a show where they leave the Milky Way? far as I know, the entire Star Trek franchise has always taken place inside the Milky Way. I dream of a show about a ship leaving the galaxy into true deep space, and explores the area in between galaxies where nobody knows anything about whats there

Stargate universe would have been, if anyone would have watched.

but there's no way a show could live more than a couple episodes in intergalactic space. super boring.

I really liked Stargate Universe. my favorite episode was the one where some people got stranded on a planet during one of the stops and missed the ship leaving. and then they were able to keep following the ship by taking gates planetside while the ship was using gates in space. it was a cool concept

Go watch The Orville instead. It's essentially Seth MacFarlane's love-letter to TNG.
Also it's on a broadcast network, instead of being used as bait for yet another balkanized streaming service.

Well that's dumb. I was expecting it to take place in the Prime Universe following Vulcan's destruction after the new movie.

I don't know. Wasn't Voyager about being 'lost in space'. Funny how they could pull over and ask for instructions and barter with species they never met before.
