I sold my PS4 a while ago because we needed the cash. I was at Walmart, figured we have the disposable income now, so I put a PS4 Pro on layaway so I wouldn’t drop the $400 all at once. I just forgot to run anything about that by her. Impulse decisions man.

Do you guys put all your funds into the same pot? Or do you keep separate accounts?

If you keep separate accounts this shouldn't matter at all. If you share all income, uhhh good luck!

Separate accounts. Mostly because I have to go to NC to close down my credit union account and I forgot last time I was there. So I’m just using it until I visit again.

If you guys keep your money separate and you don't miss any bills, she should have absolutely no concerns about what you spend your money on.

This is an understanding my fiance and I have.
We can buy whatever the hell we want and the other one will not be sour about it, UNLESS one of us misses bill payments (we split everything 50/50)

Geez, I didn't know Walmart still did layaway. That takes me back to my childhood.

I've come to learn that none of my money is disposable when I'm married. There's always a need to save for some reason or another. Vacations, future house, future kids, anniversary, christmas, your birthday, her birthday, unforeseen expenses, etc. It never ends.

This is also true.

Tbh she’s more pissed I didn’t discuss it with her. Even a “hey I’m thinking about putting a PS4 on layaway, are you cool with that?” Would’ve helped

I'd be hurt too, TC. In my marriage, there no such thing as 50/50 or "my money and his money". We share everything and always consult each other on big purchases. What you did probably made her feel less of a partner to you. But it's not the end of the world, it just slipped your mind and it happens. Just let her know you're sorry, be sincere and she'll get over it I'm sure.

I prefer the way my fiance and I handle money.

We keep our money separate and transfer 50/50 into a bill account we share to cover all bills. We talk about vacations and expenses we want to handle for our house and future and choose to save a certain amount in a joint savings account.

Whatever money is left over we can spend on whatever we want and the other doesn't worry about it.

It allows me to buy my video games and systems worry free and her to spend hundreds of dollars on hair and makeup products w/o causing any friction between us.

Finances are one reason I struggle to see myself as a married man. I have such free spending interests that giving someone veto power over it would be jarring and difficult to adapt to.

Everyone couple is different. I'm not a fan of the 3 pot system or 50/50 personally. I don't like thinking in terms of "my money" and "his money" at all. We really only consult each other for large purchases like $300 or more. Our spending habits are similar otherwise, so there's not really a need for separate accounts.

I hear that! If it's not clear then I'm not drinking enough. lol

Yeah it's all about communication than anything else. Every marriage does money management differently. Just need to find what works for the couple. My wife and I just use my bank account for everything. She gets her checks direct deposited into it whenever she's working. It's a marriage, it's all our money, even when she's not working. We both spend whatever we want but we're also reasonable with spending so we've never butted heads over it.

i think all walmarts still have holiday layaway. that was like half of the backroom when i worked there. the other half of the backroom was outside in these trailers they got for winter time lol.

money i feel is gonna be an issue when i get serious with a girl. i prefer a girl that has her own money and would like things to get split close to 50/50. doesn't need to be exact. i just don't want to burn all my money away. i worked hard for what i have and what i saved up. don't need to blow it all away. i'm planning toward my future/retirement. so many people i know live pay check to pay check and i don't wanna be in a point where i have to do that. although i'm sure once i have kids it'll start getting closer to that. i probably won't get to save much unless the girl has a good job too to where money isn't much of an issue.

I used to be really bad about just impulse buying before I met her. She helped me start to budget back when we first got together and I haven’t made any gigantic purchases without consulting her. Buuuut everyone slips up occasionally.

Well whatever works best for you guys.

The reason me and my fiance don't just share income in the same account is because I KNOW we would start justifying purchases of the shared money to one another and it would be an issue.

Keeping extra money separate just works better for us.

The excuse is "we both share this account so you can't dominate it" but watch her not bring up big ticket purchases to you.
