This happened in Montreal, of all places. This happens A LOT there. You can be talking to someone else who is also speaking English, and they will still get pissy about it. Quebec City was my school's grade 8 trip destination and the French teacher told us that if we went to a store, be sure to speak in French because some places wouldn't even acknowledge you if you used English.
