The only good thing I hear about Quebec is that the rent is cheap, but that makes sense since no one wants to live there because the culture is so aggressively french. It's like I'm sorry everyone thinks of France when they think french don't take it out on me.

Maybe their aren't any words for PizzaHut in French?

Pizza Cabane

I think the politicians are too dumb to realize that "hut" is an actual english word and it means something in english, so they just let them call themselves pizza hut

Most places outside of Montreal can be like that. I have a friend who lived her entire life in Quebec City and she didn't even know any English at all until she was, like, 18 years old.

Yeah Montreal is much more cosmopolitan

My elderly italian mom used to complain that there were too many arabs in Quebec because she saw them all the time at Costco and that soon we would be living under sharia law

So I took her to the Costco in St-Jerome where everyone is a white quebecer and she found herself reassured that white people still exist

But then again my mom is racist

Probably banned from French menus I would guess.

There's also a ban on store and restaurant names in English. They have to be made French.

KFC for example is actually known as PFK in Quebec.

But Pizza Hut is clearly fine.

The law is weird, they have to include some French word in the name, but they can mix languages. "pizza" is a french word, so it's fine. "Taco Bell" is fine because "Taco". We also have a dumb lottery laws that prevent us from participating in some video game events. Not to mention that we can't order video games that were not translated in French(But I think it doesn't affect Steam though).

I imagine Quebecians just shake their fingers at tourists and say "au francais"

You'll occasionally get people who are really snooty about it. My Qubcois friends have had experiences where they spoke in English, had someone behind them in line complain in French at the Anglophones invading and destroying Quebec culture, and then my friends would switch back to perfect French to tell them off. This happened in Montreal, of all places.

This happens A LOT there.

You can be talking to someone else who is also speaking English, and they will still get pissy about it. I'm fluent in French, but I was talking to someone who was speaking English. I'm just standing there like, I wasn't fucking talking to you.

Quebec City was my school's grade 8 trip destination and the French teacher told us that if we went to a store, be sure to speak in French because some places wouldn't even acknowledge you if you used English. I really wonder how locals felt about a busload of Anglophone students just showing up out of nowhere for a week.

I speak/understand maybe 30 different phrases in Thai, besides that I don't speak a word. I've never had anyone be mean to me for not speaking Thai. However, I had French restaurant orders be rude to my family and I (I was 13) when we stopped there to eat during our drive to Newfoundland. Quebecois drivers are no different, once they see that they you have a licence plate from another province they'll start cutting you off, no letting you merge, etc.

Yeah. It's not that they're rude to other plate drivers, they're all just shitty drivers in general. Pretty sure Canada's Worst Driver doesn't take Quebec contestants because that's just an unfair advantage.

Yeah the "language police" is insane in Quebec. You can get into big trouble with people for saying anything in English. I've had an earful more than once for saying "hi" instead of "bonjour" just when ordering fast food. But that was a long time ago.

Are you kidding? I'm reading a book in Quebec where everybody just speaks whatever he wants.
