...West you go.

Some of the buildings on the East Coast are very old, basically from settlement times, when a lot of British and European culture was brought over...New England is pretty old and grand in feeling. The middle areas of the country are pretty American, with all the successful cities and nice suburban areas. By the time you reach Cali, Arizona, etc. things feel very different from the old world, with some pretty new cities, a very "American" feel, and of course, they aren't many deserts in Europe.

I think this makes sense. I think CE will disagree, though.

It's a reflection of the colonial powers who held huge chunks of the continent at one time.
England on the east, Spain on the west, France in the middle, and Russia in Alaska.

It's the same with any country that's been occupied by its neighbours before. Poland is a good example. Western Poland is mainly comprised of European-style buildings, not dissimilar to those in Germany. Driving across from Germany to Poland doesn't yield much in the way of a change of scenery (particularly Posnan and Wroclaw). However, Eastern Poland is noticeably different as the architecture is Russian-themed. There's a section of Warsaw called Old Town that was reconstructed in the style of Poland before the war, and the difference in building styles is remarkable.
