The student killed had 3 suicide notes found in his room. He had a mental illness and was intent on being killed.

A suspect with a knife within 21 feet is considered an imminent threat. They can easily cause serious harm.

Yeah. If it's in that type of situation it's really up to the discretion of the person in it.

You can hold off longer if you want to but by no means do you have to.

For my personal opinion I think it's a threat regardless but I gotta mention that people think it's real funny to joke about nerds and shit with their throwing knives but my two military buddies who aren't nerds in any way and I throw knives at dartboards for sport when we're hanging out or drinking at his pad. It's a novel thing for sure but if someone wanted to peg you from 20 ft and they had even like basic skills with it that can turn lethal in a second flat.
