so when youre checking out you see a video screen above you showing your face.

Now this is to deter thieves, as if they can clearly see they are being "watched" they might not want to steal. Of course nobody monitors the cameras 24/7, though they can pull up footage if they need to. We had cameras there before, but they were those little black half circle ones.

I smile every time somebody sounds wary or paranoid of "being watched" when the only difference between now and the past is a video screen showing your face.

The other benefits are hand scanners and now it doesnt weigh the items in the bagging area, so you can scan and bag at your leisure. so, there are less things you need to override(such as unexpected item in the bagging area), but they also took out a huge security feature(people can now slip two of the same item in a bag when only scanning one), so you need to pay more attention. they are definitely better this way because every 5 seconds somebody would move a bag and it would go "unexpected item in bagging area" but that did actually serve a purpose.

INTERESTING! I know...

I wish every place would do this. If I'm buying one or two small items and I just want to carry them out, I hate having a big notification come up warning me that I haven't bagged them. I tend to just put them in a bag, pay for my stuff, then take them out of the bag as the receipt is printing. It's incredibly minor, but a pet peeve.

See, our old self checkouts did want you to "bag" every item, but all you had to do was place it in the bagging area and you'd be fine.

I'd see people who didnt want a bag get angry and go through any manner of hoops when all you need to do is place the item anywhere in the large, metallic bagging area.

though if the item was small(like, a packet of flower seeds) it wouldnt recognize it. then youd hit i dont want to bag and youd be fine.

Actually the new self checkouts which are so easy to use now came at a great time: we are constantly understaffed and generally have only a few lanes open.

my local walmart has something similar but in the makeup section I think, it also makes this annoying ass beeping noise you can hear from several aisles down. the beeping I was told was to draw attention to the already obvious screen showing whats being recorded so people know its there

Yeah I just noticed this at my local Walmart the other day.

I steal things all the time because self checkout makes it so easy and it's my way of saying fuck you walmart! Good to know they have made it even easier

they're so damn easy to steal from, too, like it's unreal.

if the one person supervising the stations is looking away or otherwise busy with something else, just start fake scanning stuff and put it in the bag.

if you're stopped and asked to show your receipt, just feign ignorance.

my mother in law got away with like $60 worth of shit the other day, i couldn't believe it.

My walmart has fifteen self checkout stands with one person, usually an old ass lady who's life is in ruins, running around handing out bags (because bags cost 10 cents each so there are none on the actual checkout thing, you have to ask for them) or putting in her number fixing some error. They're not even looking for shoplifters.

And now they have a dude attempting to check receipts at the door and I don't play that game and just keep walking

i can go and just like, take all the plastic bags from the checkouts and send them to you

because no one gives a single shit here, except for maybe the farmer who owns the land behind walmart and uses it as a farm, because that field gets filled with plastic bags like, always.

Most of us have gotten used to bringing our own bags, and on the few times I do not bring them and have to buy them they're only ten cents.

They've also completely changed the quality of the bags at every place now. They're like ten times as strong (so you can reuse them)

we have the low quality ones where I live and my family still reuses them. as bathroom trashcan trash bags, for emptying the cats litter boxes into, or packing clothes/items for a short trip that doesn't really require breaking out a suit case.

You don't actually have to put your items in the bag, just put them in the bagging area.

People who fail at using self checkouts are the worst.

This is the biggest issue I have with it.. I used to have a trash can full of bags from stores that I used for just those things, now I don't have that anymore.

yeah idk what I would do with out them atleast on the cat litter front, as no way in hell am I just dumping the shit (literally) right into the trash can and having to smell it until I take trash out.

I think i'd rather pay the 10 cents for walmart bags lol, something tells me the ones designed for it are probably more expensive. idk i'd have to look at them and do some math based on how many come to a box versus how many 10 cent bags would equal that amount.

edit: though i'm betting out here they are cheaper since they can't really compete with free walmart bags.

yeah they should probably make grocery store bags out of hemp or whatever it was marijuana related. read the things decomposed within 60 days.if they could boost that up to maybe another 30 days or maybe make it 6 months, that would be about perfect.

I have never met one like that unless you are going out of your way to hide items which around here is surprisingly more common at lowe's home improvement than walmart, to the point upper management will sometimes grab a bunch of shit and come through your line to see how competent you are at discovering hidden items. people will do shit like take some saw blades buy something tat comes in a box with spare room and stick the saw blades in the box. buy the boxed item but never pay for the blades (some blades can get expensive. used to do cement fiber siding and the blades we used where about 60 bucks)

Sometimes I forget to grab something from the bottom shelf or I just have a bunch of big shit I'm not pulling out of the cart. I don't even realize until I'm home. Then the door people are useless, hold your receipt for three seconds and mark it off without actually checking anything. If it got through two people it's not my problem.

ah ok that makes more sense I thought you meant not ringing up something you actually stuck up there. I actually wheel the cart around to their side of the counter and let them ring up the heavy stuff so neither of us have to pick it up. and I have noticed they are oddly trustworthy if you say throw one 2 liter on the counter and say "I got 6 more in the cart" 9 out of ten times they just take your word for it.
